Doctors issue urgent warning to anyone who drinks energy drinks

Doctors have issued an urgent warning to anyone who consumes energy drinks, citing the potential risks of serious cardiovascular conditions. Energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine, ranging from 80mg to 300mg per serving, which is significantly higher than the 100mg found in a cup of coffee.

Additionally, they often include other stimulating ingredients like taurine and guarana that can alter heart rate, blood pressure, and other heart functions. These ingredients can disrupt the heart’s electrical system, increasing the risk of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia), which can lead to severe health consequences such as sudden cardiac arrest.

Research has shown that energy drinks may trigger life-threatening conditions in patients with genetic heart diseases. In a study, seven patients who had survived a cardiac arrest following emergency treatment had consumed an energy drink before the event, with six requiring electrical shock treatment and one needing manual resuscitation.

Doctors advise caution and recommend reducing the intake of energy drinks, especially for those with preexisting heart conditions.

Instead, they suggest switching to healthier alternatives like fizzy water with added flavorings from natural sources like lemon, lime, cucumber, or mint. This warning highlights the importance of being aware of the potential risks associated with energy drink consumption and taking steps to protect heart health.
