On Tuesday, Gibney pointed to the more than $474 million Musk<\/a> has donated to Republican political groups this election cycle, adding that, \u201cLast I looked, things weren\u2019t going Elon\u2019s way, particularly in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not long after those remarks, James Talrico was declared the winner of his Senate race and Gina Hinojosa was elected the state\u2019s governor, some of the first Democrats to win a Texas statewide election in more than three decades. Musk, who has enjoyed close relationships<\/a> with Texas bigwigs for years, donated at least $158 million<\/a> to super PACs supporting Talrico\u2019s opponent, Texas attorney general Ken Paxton.<\/p>\n

Musk \u201cnow has such an extraordinary amount of money that dropping $500 million on an election means nothing to him,\u201d Gibney says. However, much of that money is tied up in his companies\u2019 stock. \u201cThe question is: What if that stock begins to fall?\u201d<\/p>\n

While making Musk<\/em>, Gibney spoke with tech entrepreneurs, former employees, and, in two particularly damning interviews,<\/a> Musk\u2019s exes\u2014his first wife, Justine Wilson, and ex-girlfriend, Ashley St. Clair. Musk<\/em> also features interviews with Schiffer and WIRED global editorial director Katie Drummond.<\/p>\n

Musk declined to be interviewed for the film. Instead, Gibney\u2019s team used Musk\u2019s past public comments to create a simulated version<\/a>, pairing actual quotes with a tanned, chiseled avatar wearing a leather jacket.<\/p>\n

On X, Musk has decried the documentary as a \u201chit piece.\u201d In September, Alex Spiro, an attorney for Musk, sent Gibney\u2019s Jigsaw Productions a letter threatening to file a defamation lawsuit ahead of the film\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

The rollout for Musk<\/em> has been complex. In early October, independent film distributor Bleecker Street\u2014which owns Musk\u2019s<\/em> domestic theatrical rights\u2014moved up<\/a> the release date by a week, following strong festival reviews. According to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, YouTube, TikTok, and Meta all initially declined to advertise the trailer for Musk<\/em> leading up to the film\u2019s debut; X did not advertise the trailer at all.<\/p>\n

Musk<\/em> will be available to rent or buy starting November 6<\/a>, at which point it will no longer play in theaters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
