According to the Reddit cofounder, building social media apps is \u201cnot cool anymore\u201d and so much of the internet has been compromised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI&#8217;m expecting some better version of the group chat to be that new version of UGC,\u201d Ohanian told WIRED senior correspondent Lauren Goode at the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/wired-world-fair-2026\/\" class=\"text link\">WIRED World Fair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uncanny-valley-podcast-big-interview-alexis-ohanian\/\" class=\"text link\">Ohanian<\/a> has a complicated relationship with the internet. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/reddit-cofounder-wants-black-person-take-board-seat\/\" class=\"text link\">resigned<\/a> from Reddit in 2020, following the killing of George Floyd, to make room for a Black board member and to pressure the company to reform its content moderation policies. The social site had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-hate-fueled-rise-of-rthe-donald-and-its-epic-takedown\/\" class=\"text link\">notorious<\/a> for hosting violent and harmful rhetoric. Ohanian reflects on recently learning someone with a Reddit tattoo\u2014once a sign of the site\u2019s success to Ohanian\u2014had since covered it up: \u201cI don\u2019t blame him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He now runs venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, which has over $1.3 billion in assets under management. He focuses on sports, where he finds real-life communities \u201cin the age of AI slop\u201d and a \u201cmanipulated\u201d internet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Ohanian is a proponent of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/let-the-internet-die\/\" class=\"text link\">Dead Internet Theory<\/a>\u201d\u2014the idea that a lot of online activity and content is being generated by bots. Large language models have turbocharged this, with AI agents outrunning human users. \u201cThe internet that I grew up on \u2026 that was really built for humans first; user interfaces and experiences are going to go away,\u201d said Ohanian, \u201cbecause more of the internet is going to get created for these agents to use, [rather] than for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In some ways, the advance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">generative AI<\/a> has been lucrative for sites like Reddit, which <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/22\/reddit-stock-google-ai-content-deal.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/22\/reddit-stock-google-ai-content-deal.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/22\/reddit-stock-google-ai-content-deal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has licensed<\/a> its vast archive of human conversations to companies including Google and OpenAI to train AI models. \u201cPlatforms like ours became very, very valuable to LLMs,\u201d Ohanian said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But the technology has also undermined the business. Reddit shares <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/30\/reddit-stock-q3-earnings.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/30\/reddit-stock-q3-earnings.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/30\/reddit-stock-q3-earnings.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plunged 29 percent<\/a> last week after the platform warned that Google\u2019s AI-powered search was hurting referral traffic. Ohanian also worries the commercialisation of these conversations means they are full of \u201cbullshit.\u201d \u201cThe internet has gotten so manipulated because it is so incredibly valuable to do so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Reddit recently said it would require users to sign in to fight third-party scraping and keep up user engagement. While Ohanian declined to say whether he agrees with the move, \u201cthere has to be provable humanity on the internet without being creepy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">An early Anthropic investor, Ohanian is nonetheless optimistic about the potential benefits of AI.
