This AI Startup Is Skipping The Lab Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"body lead-in-text\">A new British<\/span> startup believes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">artificial intelligence<\/a> is the key to speedrunning the slow and temperamental process of drug design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Potential Sciences plans to build large-scale chemical datasets by using basic principles of physics to simulate interactions between atoms, then small molecules, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nobel-prize-protein-design-now-using-ai-to-create-molecules-beyond-nature\/\" class=\"text link\">complex amino acids<\/a> and proteins. With that data, it\u2019s betting it can train AI models and prediction systems capable of identifying highly targeted drugs for specific diseases, bypassing costly and time-consuming lab experimentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe want molecules that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/viral-bodega-peptides-tests-show-they-arent-peptides-oops\/\" class=\"text link\">never going to work<\/a> in the clinic to fail fast,\u201d Hatem Helal, Potential Sciences founder and CEO, tells WIRED. \u201cThat means having better predictors of how they will behave as they interact with human biology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The startup, which launched on November 5, says it has seed funding in the tens of millions of dollars from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-uk-launches-its-dollar675-million-sovereign-ai-fund\/\" class=\"text link\">SovAI<\/a>\u2014the UK government\u2019s AI venture capital fund\u2014and Twin Path Ventures, among other investors. The founders declined to disclose the precise figure or valuation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If things pan out as Potential Sciences hopes, it could pave the way for the accelerated development of new treatments for all sorts of diseases. By reducing the cost of experimentation, Helal says, the company\u2019s approach could also make it economical for pharmaceutical companies to pursue drugs for rare conditions that have previously gone untreated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe want to make it possible to have more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-melanoma-vaccine-reduces-risk-of-tumor-reoccurrence-by-over-40-percent\/\" class=\"text link\">bespoke treatments<\/a> for diseases\u2014this idea that medicines can be one-off molecular combinations that are tailored to your unique human biology,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The question is whether Potential Sciences will be able to predict how well drug candidates will bind to disease-related proteins as accurately as it hopes, which would require a marked leap forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI\u2019m sure it will be an improvement,\u201d says Peter Wolynes, a professor of chemistry at Rice University.
