{"id":10138,"date":"2026-11-07T00:33:47","date_gmt":"2026-11-07T00:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=10138"},"modified":"2026-11-07T00:33:47","modified_gmt":"2026-11-07T00:33:47","slug":"cybertrucks-death-great-news-for-evs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=10138","title":{"rendered":"The Cybertruck\u2019s Death Is Actually Great News for EVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"body lead-in-text\">Tesla will end<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/rip-cybertruck-you-were-unloved-unwanted-and-utterly-absurd\/\" class=\"text link\">production of the Cybertruck<\/a> at its Texas Gigafactory next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s a uniquely toxic electric vehicle, between its divisive design and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/elon-musk\/\" class=\"text link\">Elon Musk\u2019s embrace<\/a> of you name it. That toxicity certainly contributed to subpar sales, along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cybertruck-recall-accelerator-pad-tesla\/\" class=\"text link\">number of recalls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But the end of the Cybertruck is also another sign that the era of big EVs\u2014particularly big trucks\u2014is waning. That\u2019s great news for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/supersize-evs-are-pushing-road-safety-to-the-limit\/\" class=\"text link\">pedestrian and biker safety<\/a>, but also for the battery supply chain at a time when more people need to get behind the electric wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Cybertruck uses a massive 123 kilowatt-hour battery that clocks in at around 1,600 pounds, or around a quarter of its weight. That\u2019s on par with the battery that powered Ford\u2019s F-150 Lightning, another electric truck that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ford-kills-electric-f-150-lightning-for-hybrid\/\" class=\"text link\">canceled late last year<\/a>. (The company also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ford-steps-back-from-evs-and-says-hybrids-are-the-future\/\" class=\"text link\">killed a three-row EV<\/a> in 2024.) Ford\u2019s behemoth batteries ranged from 98 kilowatt-hours up to 131 kilowatt-hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Seeing both trucks canceled within a year of each other, while automakers have announced a bevy of smaller EVs and gas-powered autos with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/extended-range-electric-vehicles-erev\/\" class=\"text link\">electric motors that can extend range<\/a>, indicates there may be a shift afoot. Ford is planning to launch the Fathom next year. The sub-$30,000 electric pickup is expected to be about the size of the automaker\u2019s compact gas-powered Maverick pickup. Though Ford hasn\u2019t announced the battery sizes available in various trims, it\u2019s a safe bet they won\u2019t be anywhere near the size of the F-150 Lightning or Cybertruck. The company is also planning to relaunch the Lightning as an extended-range model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Startup Slate is also launching a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/slate-ev-truck-price-specs-release-date\/\" class=\"text link\">tiny electric pickup<\/a> that can be converted to an SUV, with a bare-bones base model starting below $25,000. It also features a svelte battery and has seen a massive surge in preorders\u2014though, to be fair, so did the Cybertruck, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/where-did-the-one-million-people-who-wanted-a-cybertruck-go\/\" class=\"text link\">we saw that turned out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Then there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/rivian-r2-first-drive\/\" class=\"text link\">Rivian R2<\/a>, which launched this year. While the SUV isn\u2019t as tiny or cheap as Ford and Slate\u2019s vehicles\u2014its battery has 88 kilowatt-hours of capacity and weighs in at around 1,200 pounds\u2014it\u2019s still smaller than the company\u2019s flagship R1S. Rivian has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/rivian-r2-r3-r3x-announced\/\" class=\"text link\">teased the R3<\/a>, an even more-slimmed down SUV, in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That\u2019s not to say big EVs are dead. The Kia EV9, for example, is among the top 10 EVs by sales in the US, as is the R1S. There\u2019s also a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-10-11\/ford-s-f-150-electric-truck-is-dead-and-more-popular-than-ever\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-10-11\/ford-s-f-150-electric-truck-is-dead-and-more-popular-than-ever&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-10-11\/ford-s-f-150-electric-truck-is-dead-and-more-popular-than-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">torrid resale market<\/a> for the F-150 Lightning.
