On the prowl, you\u2019re swiping on a smartphone to catch that elusive Snorlax and grow your collection in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/thousands-of-pokemon-go-players-descend-on-times-square-to-defeat-mewtwo\/\" class=\"text link\"><em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em><\/a>. You, alongside hundreds of millions of other players, are enjoying a mixed-reality game built around lovable characters. What you don\u2019t realize is that these scans of your environment will one day help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/robots\/\" class=\"text link\">robots<\/a> navigate obstacles and interact with objects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Niantic, the creator of <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>, sold the game last year and pivoted hard into one of Silicon Valley\u2019s buzziest AI topics right now: world models. \u201cWe\u2019re very much about reconstructing the real world,\u201d says Brian McClendon, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nianticspatial.com\/en\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nianticspatial.com\/en&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nianticspatial.com\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Niantic Spatial\u2019s<\/a> chief technology officer. He hopes to leverage its trove of world data to build replicas. Unlike the text-based nature of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-chatgpt-works-large-language-model\/\" class=\"text link\">large language models<\/a>, world models use visual inputs and can generate digital environments that simulate physics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/software\/\" class=\"text link\">software<\/a> is poised to seep into everyday life, without you necessarily ever interacting directly with world models. 2027 could be a major year for the expansion of home robotics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/when-the-robotaxis-are-watching-you\/\" class=\"text link\">driverless cars<\/a>, both of which are bolstered by advances in world models. It\u2019s time to better understand how these bots think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cSo with a language model, you have a sentence, and it will predict the next word in the sentence,\u201d says Oliver Cameron, the CEO of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/odyssey.systems\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/odyssey.systems\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/odyssey.systems\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Odyssey<\/a>, an AI lab focused on world models. \u201cWith a world model, you give it a visual state of the world, an image, and it will then predict the next visual state of the world.\u201d These 3D generations can be used as digital training grounds. \u201cThey\u2019re simulations, but they look and feel real,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">McClendon sees these world models as helping robots practice without physical movement or being in intended environments. He says someone could take photos of where the robot is intended to function, generate a 3D model, and then let the software run \u201cmillions of simulations\u201d to train the robot on the space\u2019s parameters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s not just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nvidia-cosmos-ai-helps-robots-self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">humanoid robots<\/a> that could use simulated practice; driverless cars also improve using world models.
