The explosion and ensuing fireball severely damaged the only launchpad Blue Origin has for its New Glenn rocket.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cIt\u2019s too early to know the root cause but we\u2019re already working to find it,\u201d wrote Blue Origin boss <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffBezos\/status\/2060182822170902622\">Jeff Bezos on X<\/a>. \u201cVery rough day, but we\u2019ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">According to sources <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2026\/05\/blue-origins-new-glenn-rocket-just-exploded-during-a-static-fire-test\/\">speaking to <em>Ars Technica<\/em><\/a>, the transporter-erector and one of the lightning towers at LC-36A may not be salvageable. \u201cNew Glenn almost certainly will not launch again in 2026, and frankly a launch during the first half of 2027 would be heroic given the launch site concerns,\u201d writes Eric Berger, senior space editor at <em>Ars Technica<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Such a delay would affect NASA\u2019s Moon base plans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/science\/937775\/nasa-moon-base-moonfall-updates\">NASA announced<\/a> on Tuesday that New Glenn would deliver a robotic lunar lander as soon as fall 2026. In 2027, Blue Origin is also scheduled to participate in the upcoming Artemis III mission, which will see astronauts docking their Orion capsule with lunar landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cSpaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2060186268772835475\">said NASA administrator Jared Isaacman<\/a> on X. \u201cWe will work with our partners to support a thorough investigation of this anomaly, assess near-term mission impacts, and get back to launching rockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The New Glenn rocket that exploded Thursday night was being prepped to carry 48 Amazon Leo satellites \u2014 the largest batch ever slated for a single launch \u2014 into low-Earth orbit on an upcoming mission. The satellites were not onboard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">To date Amazon has launched just over 300 of the 1,618 Leo satellites the FCC requires by July 30, 2026. Amazon has applied for an extension to keep its license.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Amazon had been counting on New Glenn\u2019s massive payload capacity and reusable boosters to accelerate a launch schedule that is already behind.
