Martin Sellner, an Austrian activist and former member of a neo-Nazi group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trump-office-remigration-state-department-europe-far-right\/\" class=\"text link\">told WIRED<\/a> at the time that Trump\u2019s policy \u201cticks many of the boxes\u201d when asked if he believes remigration was already in action in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114690267066155731\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114690267066155731&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114690267066155731\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June<\/a> and July, Trump mentioned the term remigration three times on his Truth Social platform, linking it to the work ICE was doing in relation to mass deportations. \u201cIt\u2019s called \u201cREMIGRATION\u201d and, it will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,\u201d Trump wrote in a July 4 <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114801653749329102\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114801653749329102&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114801653749329102\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post on Truth Social<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, employees were apparently trying to get the new office name changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOur office leadership told us they had asked to have this terminology changed many, many, many times, and that they were repeatedly told no,\u201d says the source familiar with the office\u2019s work. \u201cAt the time there was a thought of whether this a mistake, do they know what they&#8217;re talking about, do they even understand what remigration means. But clearly they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">By the end of 2025, staff began processing government-to-government payments for deals negotiated by the Trump administration. The money was meant to be used to ensure deportees were housed in conditions that meet basic humanitarian needs, but, according to the source, there was no oversight or transparency about how that money was used after it was sent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While the Office of Remigration is not mentioned on the State Department\u2019s website, a document published in January shed further light on the agency\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cRemigration and border security are central to our diplomatic engagements, especially to those in our hemisphere,\u201d the State Department wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Agency-Strategic-Plan-for-Fiscal-Years-2026-2030.pdf\" class=\"text link\">a strategic planning document<\/a> published in January and covering 2026 to 2030. \u201cThat includes ensuring foreign countries facilitate the repatriation of their nationals who have no right to remain in the United States; negotiating arrangements with other countries to accept the transfer of asylum claimants and illegal aliens removed from American communities; and working with DHS to support voluntary remigration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In February, the Democrat minority on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/(FINAL%20-%20web)%20At%20What%20Cost%20-%20Inside%20the%20Trump%20Administration%27s%20Secret%20Deportation%20Deals_2.17.26.pdf\" class=\"text link\">published a report<\/a> that outlined the dramatic expansion of the use of third party deportations and their cost. \u201cThe total costs of the Trump Administration\u2019s third country deportations through January 2026 are unknown but are likely upward of $40 million,\u201d the report states. \u201cMuch of the funds were provided as lump sum payments, often before any third country nationals arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-state-department-really-doesnt-want-to-talk-about-the-office-of-remigration\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Trump did not use the word again in the early days of his second term in office, in May 2025, a congressional notification from the State Department revealed that the Trump administration was planning to create an Office of Remigration within the department\u2019s Bureau of Population, Migration, and Refugees.
