{"id":1274,"date":"2026-06-01T16:38:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T16:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1274"},"modified":"2026-06-01T16:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T16:38:16","slug":"websites-can-now-spy-on-you-through-your-hard-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1274","title":{"rendered":"Websites Can Now Spy on You Through Your Hard Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Over the decades, there has been no shortage of sites using clever techniques to covertly track visitors\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/privacy-browsers-duckduckgo-ghostery-brave\/\" class=\"text link\">browsing histories<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-is-browser-fingerprinting\/\" class=\"text link\">device fingerprints<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-dark-side-of-replay-sessions-that-record-your-every-move-online\/\" class=\"text link\">keystrokes and mouse movements<\/a> in real time. Even Meta and Yandex were recently caught joining in the privacy-invasive free-for-all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now sites have a new way to spy on their visitors: by measuring subtle interactions with their solid-state drives. The technique, named FROST (fingerprinting remotely using OPFS-based SSD timing), allows sites to monitor other sites a visitor is viewing and what apps are open on their devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The technique, laid out in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/hannesweissteiner.com\/pdfs\/frost.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/hannesweissteiner.com\/pdfs\/frost.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/hannesweissteiner.com\/pdfs\/frost.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research paper<\/a>, exploits a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Side-channel_attack\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Side-channel_attack&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Side-channel_attack\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">side channel<\/a>, a form of leak resulting from physical manifestations such as electromagnetic emanations, data caches, or the time required to complete a task. By measuring the manifestations, attackers can decrypt encrypted traffic and infer other confidential data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The attack that FROST uses is known as a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/usenixsecurity22\/presentation\/zhao-zirui\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/usenixsecurity22\/presentation\/zhao-zirui&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/usenixsecurity22\/presentation\/zhao-zirui\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contention side channel<\/a>, which measures the interaction of various processes all using (or competing for) a given resource. By measuring the timing of certain I\/O (input-output) operations of the SSD a visitor is using, the researchers were able to determine the websites open in other tabs\u2014even on other browsers\u2014and the apps that were open on the visitor\u2019s device. FROST requires no interaction from the visitor other than opening the site hosting the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWeb browsers have evolved from simple document viewers into complex platforms capable of running sophisticated applications,\u201d the paper authors wrote. \u201cCompanies like Google, Microsoft, and Adobe have developed full-fledged office suites, photo- and video editors, or even integrated development environments (IDEs) that run entirely within the browser.\u201d The authors went on to note: \u201cWhile these features enhance the capabilities of web applications and allow completely novel use cases, they also increase the browser\u2019s attack surface, and some have already been shown to introduce new vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Unlike previous contention side-channel attacks on SSDs, FROST runs exclusively in the browser. It uses JavaScript that interacts with the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/API\/File_System_API\/Origin_private_file_system\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/API\/File_System_API\/Origin_private_file_system&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/API\/File_System_API\/Origin_private_file_system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OPFS<\/a> (origin private file system), an allocated storage space that\u2019s reserved for a specific site to run code needed to complete a given task. Websites can create one with no interaction required by the visitor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While each file system is sandboxed, meaning it\u2019s isolated from other websites and from the device system itself, the JavaScript can measure the I\/O interactions. Then, by running those interactions through a pretrained <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convolutional_neural_network\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convolutional_neural_network&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convolutional_neural_network\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convolutional neural network<\/a>\u2014a system that uses deep learning to analyze text, audio, and images\u2014the attacker can deduce various apps and websites open on the device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe attacker continuously measures SSD contention by performing random reads from a large OPFS file,\u201d the researchers explained. \u201cSSD contention caused by user activity causes measurable latency differences for these read operations. By training a convolutional neural network (CNN) on these traces, the attacker can fingerprint user activity on the host system by classifying new traces using the trained model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The technique has its limitations. First, the OPFS file must be extremely large\u2014likely a gigabyte or more. That requirement means that attacks at scale would inevitably be detected by many users. Additionally, the OPFS file must be stored on the same SSD the visitor is using. This isn\u2019t usually a problem for tracking open websites, since the OPFS file is stored in the browser\u2019s default location. In the event apps are using a separate SSD drive for apps, those apps couldn\u2019t be detected by FROST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One of the best ways to prevent FROST attacks is to close tabs as soon as they\u2019re no longer needed. More savvy users can monitor the creation and size of OPFS files allocated by unknown websites. The researchers proposed ways for browser makers to shut down the side channel. One such method is to limit the maximum size of such files that are allowed.
