{"id":1355,"date":"2026-06-03T00:08:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T00:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1355"},"modified":"2026-06-03T00:08:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T00:08:59","slug":"uk-government-palantir-warning-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1355","title":{"rendered":"Palantir Contracts Have Become \u2018An Unacceptable Point of Weakness,\u2019 UK Politicians Warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A bipartisan group<\/span> of UK politicians is sounding the alarm over the country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/palantir-nhs-data\/\" class=\"text link\">partnership<\/a> with the data analytics company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/palantir-what-the-company-does\/\" class=\"text link\">Palantir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a report published Tuesday, the 11 members of Parliament\u2019s Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee warned that the country\u2019s ballooning reliance on Palantir\u2019s technology \u201crepresents an unacceptable point of weakness\u201d that could hand the company overwhelming bargaining power in future negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe know that with vendor lock-in, over time, we\u2019ll get more expensive and worse services,\u201d Dame Chi Onwurah, chair of the committee and member of Parliament, tells WIRED. \u201cIt\u2019s a trap that has to be avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a worst-case scenario, a deeply entrenched supplier could threaten to withhold service as a way of imposing its will, Onwurah believes. \u201cThat could bring public services and our economy to a halt,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s a huge risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though the committee says that its objections to Palantir are not ideologically motivated, the report also describes a \u201cclear mismatch with UK values.\u201d It points to politically charged comments by Palantir cofounder Peter Thiel\u2014who in 2023 described the British public\u2019s affection for the NHS as \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/21\/palantir-peter-thiel-nhs-natural-target-outspoken-tech-billionaire\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/21\/palantir-peter-thiel-nhs-natural-target-outspoken-tech-billionaire&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/21\/palantir-peter-thiel-nhs-natural-target-outspoken-tech-billionaire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stockholm syndrome<\/a>\u201d\u2014and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/palantir-employees-are-starting-to-wonder-if-theyre-the-bad-guys\/\" class=\"text link\">22-point manifesto<\/a> based on a recent book by CEO Alex Karp, which advocates for an overriding fealty to the US and its interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe have a key vendor saying they will exercise technology in accordance with their political mission,\u201d Onwurah says. \u201cIf what the UK is trying to do in our NHS or our defense does not align with Palantir\u2019s political objectives, we clearly can\u2019t depend upon them as a supplier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To minimize the risks, the committee recommended that the National Health Service, one of Palantir\u2019s primary partners in the UK, activates a clause in its contract next February that would terminate the relationship early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The UK government began to use Palantir\u2019s technology in 2020 as it scrambled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-52079287\" class=\"text link\">map the spread of the Covid-19 virus and route medical equipment<\/a> across the country. Since then, Palantir and its partners have won contracts worth a combined $750 million with the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a> and the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/palantir-lands-biggest-ever-uk-defense-deal\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/palantir-lands-biggest-ever-uk-defense-deal\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/palantir-lands-biggest-ever-uk-defense-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry of Defense<\/a>, among others. The company has touted its ability to enable \u201cinnovation and fast-paced problem solving\u201d in the UK public sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The report outlines similar dependencies on US-based cloud providers Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, and Fujitsu, the Japanese company at the center of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1wpp4w14pqo\" class=\"text link\">Post Office Horizon scandal<\/a>. But \u201cPalantir concerns us most,\u201d the committee wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Palantir did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The relationship has attracted increased scrutiny of late over the company\u2019s work with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as the US and Israeli militaries. The manifesto based on Karp\u2019s book further inflamed concerns about the company\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey\u2019re not a company that should be anywhere near British public services,\u201d says Donald Campbell, director of advocacy at Foxglove, a nonprofit that has previously campaigned for the NHS to back out of its contract with Palantir. \u201cDo you want to be giving a company of this kind\u2014with these openly expressed opinions and ideologies\u2014a central role in the UK state that it may get harder and harder to remove them from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Appearing before the committee <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/oralevidence\/16290\/pdf\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/oralevidence\/16290\/pdf\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/oralevidence\/16290\/pdf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in July last year<\/a>, Louis Mosley, who heads up Palantir\u2019s European business, distanced the company from Thiel\u2019s comments about the NHS.
