Whether or not they come to market, all of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/apple\/\" class=\"text link\">Apple\u2019s<\/a> existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-airpods\/\" class=\"text link\">ubiquitous earbuds<\/a> would become a question mark for everyone in their vicinity: Are they recording me right now?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to Bloomberg\u2019s well-sourced <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-07\/apple-s-camera-equipped-airpods-reach-advanced-testing-stage-in-ai-device-push?\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-07\/apple-s-camera-equipped-airpods-reach-advanced-testing-stage-in-ai-device-push?&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-07\/apple-s-camera-equipped-airpods-reach-advanced-testing-stage-in-ai-device-push?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Gurman<\/a>, Apple has designed camera-equipped AirPods to allow Siri \u201cto see\u201d the wearer\u2019s surroundings. They\u2019re in the late stages of testing with Apple employees as part of an \u201cAI device push.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">However, a source who asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the matter tells WIRED that Apple will likely delay the camera AirPods. While the hardware is ready, Siri&#8217;s visual intelligence is not up to par. Apple executives are also worried that the company is introducing a significant privacy risk with earbuds&#8217; cameras without compelling use cases. Apple did not immediately respond to WIRED&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That brings us to the main question: What advantages would Apple be seeking by adding cameras to its AirPods\u2014especially at a time when consumers&#8217; privacy concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-smart-glasses-face-recognition-nametag-connections\/\" class=\"text link\">casual surveillance through smart glasses&#8217; cameras<\/a>, doorbell cams, and even phone cameras are on the rise?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Navigation, Shopping, and a Smarter Siri<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to Bloomberg, these AirPods have larger stems to house low-resolution cameras\u2014they act as Siri\u2019s eyes as visual context for spoken requests. They\u2019re not built to capture photos and video, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">smart glasses<\/a>. A few use cases mentioned in the report include landmark-based navigation and identifying foods to help with grocery shopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cVision-based location is the most obvious one,\u201d says Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights &amp; Strategy. \u201cIt&#8217;s got to be a very passive kind of experience, and that&#8217;s why I think using it for location-based accuracy, to rectify GPS, makes sense.\u201d Google is also using cameras in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hands-on-with-all-of-google-new-upcoming-android-xr-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">upcoming smart glasses<\/a> to understand a user&#8217;s bearings when using walking navigation with Google Maps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Other potential features will be familiar to anyone up to date on smart glasses. Peter Richardson, vice president at Counterpoint Research, likes the idea of standing in front of the fridge and asking the AI assistant what to make for dinner, as an example in which data from multiple devices could work together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThat\u2019s something that requires visual information,\u201d Richardson says. \u201cThere\u2019s lots of context: Is it the middle of the week? Have I got training in the morning? Is it a Friday when maybe I like to have a glass of wine? Are my friends over?\u201d Similarly, combined with the Apple Watch, visual data could make Siri more intuitive. \u201cIf I\u2019m in Paddington Station and I\u2019m running, maybe I\u2019m late for a train, so maybe don\u2019t send a call to me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As with many niche wearables, there are also some interesting accessibility applications. <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/05\/22\/airpods-with-cameras-suddenly-make-a-lot-more-sense-after-this-new-reveal\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/05\/22\/airpods-with-cameras-suddenly-make-a-lot-more-sense-after-this-new-reveal\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/05\/22\/airpods-with-cameras-suddenly-make-a-lot-more-sense-after-this-new-reveal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">9to5mac<\/a> suggests that an all-seeing Siri via AirPods, perhaps with infrared capabilities in the mix, could enhance the capabilities of Apple\u2019s Image Explorer and Voice Over features for visually impaired users. In all these scenarios, a key piece of information that we still don\u2019t have is whether the cameras would be forward-facing or world-facing. Gurman indicates that a \u201csmall LED light\u201d will turn on when visual data is being fed into the cloud.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Visual Data for AI<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At first glance, the reasoning here might be obvious: a real-world data grab. As Big Tech AI model makers and enterprising startups push further beyond text-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-chatgpt-works-large-language-model\/\" class=\"text link\">large language models<\/a>, into imaging, mapping, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/robotics\/\" class=\"text link\">robotics<\/a>, Apple\u2019s popular, affordable accessory could be transformed into the 2026 equivalent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/googles-new-street-view-cameras-will-help-algorithms-index-the-real-world\/\" class=\"text link\">Google\u2019s StreetView cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cGetting information in, visual or even acoustic, that\u2019s new information that\u2019s never really been used to train AI,\u201d Richardson says. \u201cBut it\u2019s only useful if it can then be used to train it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-apple-might-put-cameras-into-its-next-airpods\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you were to ding Apple\u2019s privacy credentials in one move, you could do worse than to launch AirPods with cameras.
