{"id":1533,"date":"2026-06-05T15:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1533"},"modified":"2026-06-05T15:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:22:14","slug":"the-doge-boys-get-vc-funding-to-support-their-latest-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1533","title":{"rendered":"The DOGE Boys Get VC Funding to Support Their Latest Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Former members of<\/span> the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doge-elon-musk\/\" class=\"text link\">Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)<\/a> have launched a startup to, they say, bring <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/natecavanaugh\/status\/2061832728543183189\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/natecavanaugh\/status\/2061832728543183189&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/natecavanaugh\/status\/2061832728543183189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDOGE for the private sector.\u201d<\/a> Their holding company, called Special, has backing from billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uncanny-valley-podcast-11-marc-andreessen\/\" class=\"text link\">Marc Andreessen\u2019s<\/a> venture capital firm a16z and several other former DOGE members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.a16z.news\/p\/introducing-special\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.a16z.news\/p\/introducing-special&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.a16z.news\/p\/introducing-special\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a post<\/a> on a16z\u2019s Substack, Nate Cavanaugh and Justin Fox, who led DOGE\u2019s efforts at several government agencies, write that their startup will build \u201can operating system to transform critical American industries with AI,\u201d and claim that \u201cMain Street,\u201d like the federal government, is inefficient. The plan, according to Fox and Cavanaugh, is to \u201cvertically integrate,\u201d buying up businesses in critical sectors and running them using Special\u2019s operating system. Their first target is senior care, with a vertical called <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.figurehealth.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.figurehealth.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.figurehealth.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FigureHealth<\/a>. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=onWx5AO4qAE\" class=\"text link\">interview on TBPN<\/a>, Cavanaugh said that Special is also looking at \u201cmarkets like construction, manufacturing, other very labor intensive, highly regulated markets that a lot of the learnings we had from DOGE can then get applied back into the private sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Their work also purports to target waste, and cites recent Republican talking points about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/edward-coristine-nick-shirley-fraud-videos\/\" class=\"text link\">blue states and fraud<\/a>. \u201cOne needs to look no further than childcare learning centers in Minnesota or hospice businesses in California to find immense waste at the state level from businesses that benefit from taxpayer dollars,\u201d Fox and Cavanaugh write. Allegations of waste and fraud were key to DOGE\u2019s own justification for cutting government contracts, jobs, and even shutting down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-trumps-aid-cuts-are-fueling-the-ebola-outbreak\/\" class=\"text link\">US Agency for International Development (USAID)<\/a>. Fraud allegations against Minnesota childcare centers formed the justification for President Donald Trump\u2019s administration to deploy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ice-detention-network-minnesota-5-states\/\" class=\"text link\">thousands of immigration agents<\/a> to the state earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis pitch relies on DOGE-y tropes, with references to fraud in Minnesota. It\u2019s a very bro-y perspective on government and what the issues are,\u201d says Don Moynihan, a professor of public policy at the University of Michigan. \u201cIf you think the biggest issue in the American government is welfare fraud, then that suggests a pretty narrow perspective on the major challenges that we face right now. But that has been the perspective of DOGE, Musk, and the rest of the administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">With Andreessen Horowitz leading the funding round, Cavanaugh and Fox also say that some of their \u201cDOGE teammates\u201d were backing the venture, including Steve Davis, billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s right-hand man who functioned as the coordinator of DOGE\u2019s operations; Antonio Gracias, founder of Valor Equity Partners and a close Musk associate who was involved with DOGE\u2019s work at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doge-operatives-access-social-security-administration\/\" class=\"text link\">Social Security Administration<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fired-doge-staffer-who-is-in-charge\/\" class=\"text link\">Baris Akis<\/a>, a Turkish national who functioned as an informal recruiter for DOGE; Anthony Armstrong, formerly the chief financial officer at Musk\u2019s xAI; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/edward-coristine-big-balls-doge-federal-pay-roll-system\/\" class=\"text link\">Donald Park<\/a>, who was part of DOGE\u2019s operations at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-doge-set-up-a-shadow-x-account-for-a-government-agency\/\" class=\"text link\">Small Business Administration<\/a>; and Adam Ramada and Brooks Morgan, who founded the Austin-based BANNER VC after leaving DOGE in August 2025. Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong, and Shyam Sankar, the chief technology officer at Palantir, the defense contracting firm co-founded by billionaire and Musk ally Peter Thiel, also participated in the funding round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cavanaugh and Fox did not respond to requests for comment; neither did their apparent investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While part of DOGE, Cavanaugh and Fox led the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doge-takes-control-usip-office-building\/\" class=\"text link\">forcible takeover<\/a> of the Congressionally-funded nonprofit organization, the US Institute of Peace (USIP). After being installed as USIP\u2019s acting director, Cavanaugh attempted to gift <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doge-takes-control-usip-office-building\/\" class=\"text link\">its building to the government<\/a>, a move that is currently the subject of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trump-admins-plans-for-dollar500-million-usip-building-may-violate-court-order-say-former-workers\/\" class=\"text link\">ongoing court case<\/a>. Cavanaugh was also appointed the acting director of the Interagency Council on Homelessness.
