{"id":1560,"date":"2026-06-05T23:45:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1560"},"modified":"2026-06-05T23:45:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:45:10","slug":"has-microsoft-lost-its-mojo-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1560","title":{"rendered":"Has Microsoft Lost Its Mojo (Again)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>You went down the coding agent rabbit hole last November along with everyone else?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It was an intense time for the nerds. I spent a lot of time talking to coding agents during that holiday. And it\u2019s been an absolute rocket ship of a ride since then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Claude Code seems to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-codex-race-claude-code\/\" class=\"text link\">gotten the thunder<\/a> there, beating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-really-wants-codex-to-shut-up-about-goblins\/\" class=\"text link\">Codex<\/a>, and frankly, Copilot. A few years ago Microsoft\u2019s Copilot coding tool seemed to stand at the head of the pack. Now it\u2019s Claude Code.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I would respectfully disagree. Coding models are part of it, but Microsoft is a great place for developers. Windows is an open platform on open hardware where people can build anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Microsoft wants Scout to be adopted by productivity workers and even consumers. AI agents make mistakes and have hallucinations. How many errors will people tolerate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That\u2019s a good question. I don\u2019t know. Trust but verify. Give it a small task, and then try it out, and see if it works. And then, \u201cOh it hasn\u2019t done anything wrong. I\u2019ll give it read-only access to something.\u201d For example, when I tell somebody I gave OpenClaw access to my blood sugar, because I\u2019m a type 1 diabetic, there\u2019s the knee-jerk reaction, \u201cHow dare you give an agent access to your health data?\u201d It is super useful for me to get proactive notifications about my blood sugar. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a controversial thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>I get that, but right now there are many people who are skeptical or hostile to AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When a new tool is introduced, whether it be a chainsaw, a power tool, or the internal combustion engine, there\u2019s a chaotic time as people figure out how to make this thing good for humans. I am not personally all in on AI, because I vote with my feet. I don\u2019t use AI image generation, and I don\u2019t use AI video generation, because I don\u2019t believe in those things. I use AI for coding, and I find it to be a joy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Yes, coders absolutely love agents, but outside of that community, there\u2019s resistance. Microsoft has seen this in the underperformance of its AI productivity tools. Are you anticipating similar headwinds with agentic AI?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They\u2019ll either like it or they won\u2019t. I remember when the Walkman came out and people said, \u201cNo one\u2019s going to wear those things on their heads. Those headphones look ridiculous.\u201d Now we all walk around with these white Q-tips hanging out of our ears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>You don\u2019t feel that Microsoft is in catch-up mode?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I would respectfully push back and point out that everybody\u2019s in catch-up mode, because you pull ahead and then you go back and forth. It\u2019s a thumb war. I would remind folks that the term \u201cCopilot\u201d was something that Microsoft did first, and that term has become like Kleenex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Do you feel that this year\u2019s developer conference has put Microsoft back in the race?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A couple of Mac users were hanging out with me backstage, and they watched the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/devices\/surface-laptop-ultra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Surface Laptop Ultra<\/a> announced. They saw all the new developer tools, and they begrudgingly looked at us and said, \u201cDang it, you\u2019re going to make me get a Surface, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>The trash cans at Fort Mason are full of MacBook Airs now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That would be an amazing result, although I would hate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-responsibly-dispose-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">make more eco waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"paywall\"\/>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>This is an edition of<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/author\/steven-levy\/\" class=\"text link\"><em><strong>Steven Levy\u2019s<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/newsletter?sourceCode=editarticle\" class=\"text link\"><strong>Backchannel newsletter<\/strong><\/a>.
