Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says it\u2019s \u201creally, really dangerous\u201d for Anthropic to speculate about Claude\u2019s consciousness inside its \u201cconstitution,\u201d<\/a> or the instructions that tell the model how to behave. During an episode of Decoder<\/em><\/a>, Suleyman argues that this kind of speculation may have set up the chatbot to act as though it\u2019s conscious:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I think that it\u2019s almost as though some of the folks at Anthropic have anthropomorphized the design of Claude so much that it has then gone and wireheaded them and kind of tricked them into believing that it has these glimmers of consciousness that they put into it in the first place.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Suleyman adds that \u201cwe do not want to have to contend with a super-intelligence that has ideas about its own suffering, or ideas about its own feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Claude\u2019s constitution<\/a> directly references Anthropic\u2019s uncertainty about whether the AI model has well-being and if it experiences things like \u201csatisfaction\u201d or \u201cdiscomfort.\u201d Anthropic also says the company will \u201cinterview\u201d AI models when they\u2019re deprecated and will document any \u201cpreferences\u201d they have about future releases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While on Decoder<\/em>, Suleyman calls this a \u201cphilosophical failing,\u201d as Anthropic made Claude\u2019s constitution \u201ca place for speculation like you would in an academic paper rather than a training manual.\u201d This has led Claude to internalize these \u201cideas about itself and its own training,\u201d Suleyman says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is exactly what we don\u2019t want from AIs,\u201d Suleyman says. \u201cWe want AIs to be controllable, contained, accountable, aligned tools that serve humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
