Bluesky will be getting \u201ccommunities,\u201d which will function as smaller spaces where you can \u201cgo deeper and hang out with people who care about the same stuff\u201d sometime this year, according to head of product Alex Benzer. They will be built on the decentralized AT Protocol that underpins Bluesky, with Benzer saying that \u201cit\u2019s a new structure for everyone\u201d that\u2019s part of the \u201cAtmosphere\u201d (a shorthand for the AT Protocol ecosystem).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Benzer listed out a \u201cfew ideas we have in mind so far\u201d in a thread<\/a>. \u201cOn Bluesky, you\u2019ll be able to create communities, join them, post in them, and get updates,\u201d Benzer says<\/a>. \u201cThe core features on Bluesky stay simple. The magic comes from communities also existing on the open web. This means you can truly customize them and add features with other Atmospheric apps and tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Communities will get a handle that \u201cdoubles as a URL,\u201d and if you go to that URL, you\u2019ll \u201cland on a custom homepage for the community,\u201d according to Benzer. \u201cBuilders can also host a completely custom experience there instead.\u201d There will be three privacy levels for communities: public, invite-only, and private. And each community would have its own feed, Benzer says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Benzer\u2019s thread follows Bluesky COO Rose Wang saying last week<\/a> that the company wanted to move away from being a \u201cpublic square\u201d and that it was \u201cvery inspired by companies like Reddit.\u201d Meta\u2019s Threads is currently testing a communities feature<\/a>, while X announced in April<\/a> that it would be shutting down its own take on communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
