{"id":1946,"date":"2026-06-11T19:20:47","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T19:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1946"},"modified":"2026-06-11T19:20:47","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T19:20:47","slug":"youtube-appears-to-be-making-money-off-of-sanctioned-iranian-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=1946","title":{"rendered":"YouTube Appears to Be Making Money Off of Sanctioned Iranians\u2019 Accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">As the US<\/span> war with Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/internet-in-iran-starts-to-return-after-3-month-blackout\/\" class=\"text link\">continues to roil the Middle East<\/a>, new research shared exclusively with WIRED shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/youtube\/\" class=\"text link\">YouTube<\/a> is hosting and possibly profiting from dozens of channels linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-x-premium-accounts-iran\/\" class=\"text link\">US-sanctioned groups<\/a> linked to the Iranian government, including many with direct ties to the country\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/youtube-profits-off-u.s.-sanctioned-iranians-amid-middle-east-conflict\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/youtube-profits-off-u.s.-sanctioned-iranians-amid-middle-east-conflict&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/youtube-profits-off-u.s.-sanctioned-iranians-amid-middle-east-conflict\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a>, from the nonprofit Tech Transparency Project, identified more than 75 channels that appear to be run by entities that have been officially sanctioned by the Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which has been enforcing sanctions against Iran for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The channels have been monetized, meaning that YouTube runs ads on their videos that generate revenue. The researchers documented ads for companies ranging from Subaru to Verizon, TurboTax, the weight-loss drug Ozempic, and fast-food outlet KFC. In one case, the researchers observed an ad for the US Customs and Border Protection running on a video produced by Iran\u2019s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThat means YouTube placed an ad paid for with US tax dollars on a channel for an Iranian government ministry,\u201d the researchers wrote. A spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection tells WIRED the \u201cads are placed through a third-party contractor working with Google. We maintain brand safety controls and exclusion lists designed to prevent placement alongside sensitive content and regularly review and update those safeguards.\u201d The spokesperson added that they have raised the issue with YouTube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe numerous holders of all these YouTube channels include Iranian individuals and entities that aren\u2019t just subject to the comprehensive US embargo on Iran, but sanctioned by OFAC under a variety of its sanctions programs, including counterterrorism, nonproliferation, human rights abuses, or those specific to the Iranian government more generally,\u201d Kian Meshkat, an attorney specializing in US economic sanctions who reviewed the research, tells WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cGoogle is committed to compliance with applicable sanctions and trade compliance laws,\u201d says Google spokesperson Nate Funkhouser. \u201cAfter review, we took enforcement action against the channels that violated our policies.\u201d The company did not specify what kind of action it took, or on how many account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">YouTube was officially banned in Iran in 2012, but it continues to be used by the regime to share propaganda. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/adsense\/answer\/10502938\" class=\"text link\">Google\u2019s own publisher policies<\/a>, which apply to YouTube, make it clear that the company\u2019s ad tools \u201cmay not be used for or on behalf\u201d of parties in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In 2024, YouTube did take some action, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/youtube-iran-ban-ministry-channel\/32970331.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/youtube-iran-ban-ministry-channel\/32970331.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/youtube-iran-ban-ministry-channel\/32970331.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shutting down an account<\/a> associated with Iran\u2019s foreign ministry. \u201dDue to established US sanctions, Iran&#8217;s state-owned channels are not permitted on YouTube,\u201d the company said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">TTP\u2019s researchers trawled the platform for the names of individuals directly sanctioned by the US as a threat to national security, as well as for accounts seemingly run by Iranian government officials, identifying a total of 84 channels. All showed ads in the videos on their channels, including in-feed ads, in-stream ads, and YouTube Shorts ads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Among the sanctioned individuals identified were <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0375\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0375&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0375\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Babak Zanjani<\/a>, a businessman helping Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps evade sanctions; <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/sanctionssearch.ofac.treas.gov\/Details.aspx?id=26952\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/sanctionssearch.ofac.treas.gov\/Details.aspx?id=26952&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/sanctionssearch.ofac.treas.gov\/Details.aspx?id=26952\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ali Akbar Velayati<\/a>, an adviser to Iran\u2019s new supreme leader who threatened US forces in the region; and Naji Sharifi Zindashti, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/wanted\/counterintelligence\/naji-sharifi-zindashti\" class=\"text link\">accused of targeting Iranian dissidents<\/a> abroad for assassination, including two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/one-iranian-and-two-canadian-nationals-indicted-murder-hire-scheme\" class=\"text link\">residents of Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Al-Mustafa International University, an Iranian Islamic seminary school <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm1205\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm1205&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm1205\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sanctioned in 2020<\/a> for indoctrinating and recruiting foreign intelligence sources, has at least four YouTube channels, according to the researchers, including English- and French-language channels.
