Another is that you probably won\u2019t be one of them. At least not any time soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There\u2019s extraordinary interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/wired.com\/tag\/elon-musk\" class=\"text link\">Elon Musk\u2019s<\/a> rocket-and-AI company\u2019s public debut, and for good reason. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/spacex\" class=\"text link\">SpaceX<\/a> was already the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-emperor-of-space\/\" class=\"text link\">leading private space company<\/a> in the world, its rockets shuttling astronauts to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-is-the-worst-thing-that-could-happen-to-the-international-space-station\/\" class=\"text link\">International Space Station<\/a> and its Starlink satellites providing internet connectivity to millions of people around the world. Its recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/spacex-acquires-xai-elon-musk\/\" class=\"text link\">acquisition of xAI<\/a> means it is also the first of the big three AI startups in the US to go public, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-files-s1-ipo-sec\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-confidentially-files-for-ipo\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> following close behind. The company raised $75 billion, valuing it at $1.75 trillion, which would make it the biggest IPO ever by a sizable margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Like all IPOs, though, stratospheric wealth will likely be reserved for those who already hold shares of SpaceX, which means employees, big institutional asset managers, and Elon Musk. Even though so-called retail investors\u2014individuals who don\u2019t buy stock professionally\u2014will have more access to SpaceX shares than is typical for an IPO, most people won\u2019t be in a position to see serious gains .<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To be absolutely clear, this isn\u2019t investment advice, or a prediction about the long-term financial health of SpaceX or its share price. It\u2019s simple mechanics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe system is unfair,\u201d says Campbell Harvey, a professor of finance at Duke University\u2019s Fuqua School of Business. Here\u2019s how it works\u2014and who it works for.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">The Inside Track<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Typically, the vast majority of retail investors wouldn\u2019t be able to get in on an IPO at all. These offerings tend to be exclusive clubs, with tightly curated guest lists made up of institutional investors like mutual funds and asset managers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The SpaceX IPO is different, though, in a few key ways. SpaceX has indicated that it wants to set aside 30 percent of its \u201cfloat\u201d (the number of shares made available for public trading) for the Average Joe, which works out to about $22.5 billion worth of shares. (Typically a company will set aside much less for retail investors in an IPO; Fidelity <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/learning-center\/trading-investing\/spacex-ipo-explained\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/learning-center\/trading-investing\/spacex-ipo-explained&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/learning-center\/trading-investing\/spacex-ipo-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pegs it<\/a> at 5 to 10 percent.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Depending on your broker, you may also need a lot less money to get involved. Take Fidelity, one of the largest asset managers in the world. For a typical IPO, Fidelity requires you to have at least $100,000 (or sometimes $500,000) in household assets to participate; for SpaceX, it\u2019s brought that minimum down to two grand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So yes, it\u2019s easier to get on the guest list for the club. But there are still only so many tables inside. Remember that $75 billion worth of stock SpaceX raised? Bloomberg reported Thursday that SpaceX had received $100 billion worth of orders from hopeful retail investors. And that\u2019s before you even get to the asset managers trying to muscle in; BlackRock alone <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/spacex-ipo-draws-at-least-5-billion-order-from-blackrock-12fcd29f\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/spacex-ipo-draws-at-least-5-billion-order-from-blackrock-12fcd29f&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/spacex-ipo-draws-at-least-5-billion-order-from-blackrock-12fcd29f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> submitted a $5 billion order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">SpaceX\u2019s bankers ultimately decide who gets the right to buy stock at the IPO price of $135 a share, and how much of it. The odds that you\u2019ll make it past the velvet rope\u2014even with the loosened standards\u2014are vanishingly small. And even if you do, the number of shares that you get will likely be a pittance. Tell your brokerage firm that you want 10, and you might be lucky to get one or two. That\u2019s not exactly setting you up for generational wealth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe average investor gets the leftovers,\u201d says Harvey.
