{"id":2017,"date":"2026-06-12T17:45:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2017"},"modified":"2026-06-12T17:45:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:45:54","slug":"china-us-data-center-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2017","title":{"rendered":"China Didn&#8217;t Make People Hate Data Centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Right-wing officials and<\/span> data center investors are increasingly claiming that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-law-enforcement-warns-of-anti-tech-extremism\/\" class=\"text link\">data center protests<\/a> are being funded and influenced by the Chinese government. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/openai\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> added to the discourse on Wednesday when it released a report describing a cluster of accounts originating in China that, the company said, had been spreading anti-data center messages on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Experts who spoke to WIRED, however, are skeptical of the funding claims. They also say that it\u2019s likely that any foreign interference is simply adding on to existing tensions over data centers and AI in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-data-center-resistance-has-arrived\/\" class=\"text link\">opposition to data centers<\/a> in the US has skyrocketed in recent months. A poll released last week from climate outlet Heatmap shows that <a class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/heatmap.news\/plus\/the-fight\/spotlight\/data-center-moratorium-poll&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/heatmap.news\/plus\/the-fight\/spotlight\/data-center-moratorium-poll\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than half of Americans support a moratorium<\/a> on data center development. Separate <a class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/sturgeon-bugle-3yp7.squarespace.com\/blog\/how-the-data-center-boom-could-end&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/sturgeon-bugle-3yp7.squarespace.com\/blog\/how-the-data-center-boom-could-end\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polling<\/a> released in early June from UK-based policy research agency Public First shows that support for data centers in the US was the lowest of 15 countries surveyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The meme that Beijing is funding data center opposition has picked up steam in Washington, DC in recent weeks. On Wednesday, Senator Tom Cotton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotton.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/cotton-to-doj-investigate-communist-china-influence-on-data-center-development\" class=\"text link\">sent a letter<\/a> to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche asking for an investigation into foreign influence \u201cled by the Chinese Communist Party\u201d to manipulate public opinion. He&#8217;s not the only one: Republican leaders on the House Energy and Commerce Committee <a class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net\/2026_06_04_Letter_to_PCAST_and_FBI_on_Foreign_Influence_AI_Data_Centers_99f6aa6cda.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net\/2026_06_04_Letter_to_PCAST_and_FBI_on_Foreign_Influence_AI_Data_Centers_99f6aa6cda.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent a separate letter<\/a> to the White House and the FBI last week expressing concerns about foreign campaigns targeting data center development,. Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Fox Business last month that places trying to build data centers are \u201cgetting bombarded\u201d with foreign propaganda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Data center developers have also been quick to deploy these ideas. Canadian investor Kevin O\u2019Leary, who\u2019s developing a massive and controversial data center in Utah, used a graphic from a recent report from the Bitcoin Policy Institute, a cryptocurrency advocacy organization, in a May video claiming that foreign influence was fueling opposition to his project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Graphika, a social media analytics company, has been tracking data center opposition across several social platforms, including Facebook, Bluesky, and TikTok for the past year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Dina Sadek, an analyst at Graphika, says in a statement that the company has \u201cnot yet seen evidence of organized or scaled influence operations or campaigns that can be traced back to a foreign actor,\u201d with two notable exceptions. One is a \u201ccross-platform network of accounts\u201d using AI-generated avatars that comment on a wide variety of social issues, and that \u201csporadically\u201d mention US tech companies. The other exception, Sadek says, is some Facebook pages producing <a class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.404media.co\/ai-grifters-are-making-anti-data-center-slop-with-ai\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/ai-grifters-are-making-anti-data-center-slop-with-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anti-data center images generated with AI<\/a>. Those pages, Sadek says, often have administrators based in Bangladesh, and may only exist \u201cfor monetization purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;Our ongoing research indicates that domestic US actors are leading the online anti-data center conversation,\u201d Sadek says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI\u2019s report includes ChatGPT-generated anti-data center images that the company says were used as a campaign \u201cto amplify existing public concerns about energy prices and local impacts of data center development.\u201d But the company notes that it \u201cfound no evidence of meaningful breakout\u201d of the anti-data center messaging from the accounts it flagged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Bitcoin Policy Institute report O\u2019Leary cited is one of the key sources of right-wing claims about Chinese influence. The report, which House Republicans also referenced in their letter, alleges that a tangle of nonprofit funding connects popular anti-data center efforts to foreign funders, including the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The report also says Chinese state media is \u201copenly campaigning against US AI data centers.\u201d As evidence it cites stories and videos about the anti-data center trend and rising energy costs, both topics that American and other international outlets have published countless stories on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/china-us-data-center-opposition\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right-wing officials and data center investors are increasingly claiming that data center protests are being funded and influenced by the Chinese government.
