{"id":2023,"date":"2026-06-12T19:06:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T19:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2026-06-12T19:06:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T19:06:27","slug":"donald-trumps-white-house-ufc-event-would-be-embarrassing-anywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2023","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump\u2019s White House UFC Event Would Be Embarrassing Anywhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">With his history<\/span> of involvement in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2012\/12\/wwe-storytelling-john-cena\/\" class=\"text link\">pro wrestling<\/a> and boxing and his zeal for garish excess\u2014the man is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trumps-casinos-could-not-make-atlantic-city-great-again\/\" class=\"text link\">failed casino impresario<\/a>, after all\u2014it makes perfect sense that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" class=\"text link\">Donald Trump<\/a> would want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/they-helped-plan-the-january-6-rally-now-their-events-company-is-raking-in-millions-in-government-contracts\/\" class=\"text link\">celebrate both America\u2019s birthday<\/a> and his own with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/donald-trump-ufc-white-house-south-lawn\/\" class=\"text link\">UFC cage fights on the White House lawn<\/a>, sponsored by Monster Energy. If there\u2019s been any surprise, it\u2019s been in how the whole affair has so far failed to clear the lowest bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The event\u2019s promoters are certainly setting expectations high. \u201cWe\u2019re putting on the most historic sporting event in history,\u201d UFC hypeman and CEO Dana White <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/time100-sports\/2026\/dana-white\/?filters=Leaders\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/time100-sports\/2026\/dana-white\/?filters=Leaders&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/time100-sports\/2026\/dana-white\/?filters=Leaders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Time<\/a>. One problem here is that this fight card would, in absence of the White House backdrop, not be the most historic scheduled for the next month, or an especially big or impressive one by the standards of any month. \u201cDignity\u201d is not a word usually associated with fight promotion; even so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On Thursday, multihyphenate Marco Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/06\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-at-the-signing-of-a-memorandum-of-understanding-ceremony-with-the-ultimate-fighting-championship\/\" class=\"text link\">compared<\/a> the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship to the moon landing while making a difficult-to-follow point about the uniquely American nature of the company. Absurd as this might be generally, it\u2019s somehow more so specifically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The UFC, founded largely to showcase a Brazilian family\u2019s jiu-jitsu skills, was not the first MMA promotion. It wasn\u2019t even the first MMA promotion founded in 1993. (That honor goes to Pancrase, which itself was not even the first Japanese MMA promotion to ask \u201cWhat if pro wrestling was real?\u201d) White did not, as Rubio claimed, introduce the ideas of rules and weight classes to the sport. None of this made any sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rubio, in his capacity as secretary of state, was at an event with White in Washington, DC, to sign what was for some reason called a memorandum of understanding meant to bring the UFC\u2019s unique virtues to the administration\u2019s sports diplomacy. Perhaps Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov, whose deep ties to UFC fighters the UFC has long <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/15\/sports\/ufc-kadyrov-khamzat-chimaev.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/15\/sports\/ufc-kadyrov-khamzat-chimaev.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/15\/sports\/ufc-kadyrov-khamzat-chimaev.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> do not contractually extend to the UFC itself, will play a part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">White is, to be fair, an innovator. His Power Slap show, which premiered in January 2023\u2014the same month TMZ <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/05\/sports\/dana-white-slap-wife-ufc.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/05\/sports\/dana-white-slap-wife-ufc.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/05\/sports\/dana-white-slap-wife-ufc.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> a video of him slapping his wife in public\u2014promotes a genuinely novel and uniquely American sport consisting solely of people attempting to concuss each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, he\u2019s disrupting in the bombast space by <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChampRDS\/status\/2063963526868140189\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/ChampRDS\/status\/2063963526868140189&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChampRDS\/status\/2063963526868140189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claiming<\/a> that he expects \u201cSuper Bowl type numbers\u201d for Sunday\u2019s event. (Netflix, which <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mma\/article\/ronda-rousey-vs-gina-carano-shatters-us-record-for-most-watched-mma-event-ever-peaks-at-17-million-globally-220513049.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mma\/article\/ronda-rousey-vs-gina-carano-shatters-us-record-for-most-watched-mma-event-ever-peaks-at-17-million-globally-220513049.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mma\/article\/ronda-rousey-vs-gina-carano-shatters-us-record-for-most-watched-mma-event-ever-peaks-at-17-million-globally-220513049.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asserts<\/a> that its recent Ronda Rousey fight was the most-watched MMA event of all time, pegged peak US viewership at 11.6 million\u2014less than 10 percent of the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/nielsen-revises-super-bowl-final-rating-to-125-million-viewers\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/nielsen-revises-super-bowl-final-rating-to-125-million-viewers&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/nielsen-revises-super-bowl-final-rating-to-125-million-viewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">average<\/a> audience for the most recent Super Bowl.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Certainly no expense has been spared for the ostensible most historic event in history. Looking at the White House lawn, you&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking organizers literally transported in the contents of a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UFC_Apex\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UFC_Apex&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UFC_Apex\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta-branded warehouse<\/a> from Las Vegas and dumped it there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If UFC Freedom 250 fails to be watched by every person in the US, that may be because, for a card featuring fighters making their entrances from the Oval Office, it\u2019s not exactly thrilling. A generous descriptor would be \u2026 fine. In the main event, undefeated 155-pound champion Ilia Topuria will fight interim 155-pound champion Justin Gaethje, who\u2019s been as reliably entertaining a fighter as there is for years. There will be an interim heavyweight title bout and several other fights as well, nearly all of them featuring ranked fighters (and none of them featuring women).
