{"id":2049,"date":"2026-06-13T02:49:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T02:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2026-06-13T02:49:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T02:49:05","slug":"anthropic-says-us-government-ordered-it-to-shut-down-mythos-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2049","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic Says It\u2019s Taking Claude Fable 5 Offline to Comply With US Government Order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Anthropic says it\u2019s<\/span> disabling two AI models it launched earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-releases-claude-fable-5-mythos-5\/\" class=\"text link\">Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5<\/a>, to comply with an export control directive it received Friday afternoon from the US government citing national security concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The unprecedented incident marks the latest flashpoint between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trump-administration-refuses-to-say-it-wont-take-further-action-against-anthropic\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic and the Trump administration<\/a>. While the company says the order asked it to suspend access to \u201cany foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees,\u201d it has removed access for all of its customers to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Earlier this year, Trump\u2019s Department of Defense labeled Anthropic a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-supply-chain-risk-shockwaves-silicon-valley\/\" class=\"text link\">supply chain risk<\/a>\u201d after the Claude-maker sought to draw red lines over how the US military could use its technology. The designation effectively barred government agencies and contractors from using Anthropic\u2019s technology. Anthropic responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-sues-department-of-defense-over-supply-chain-risk-designation\/\" class=\"text link\">filing lawsuits<\/a> against the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On Tuesday, Anthropic publicly released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-responds-to-backlash-on-claudes-secret-sabotage-on-ai-research\/\" class=\"text link\">Claude Fable 5<\/a>, a version of the company\u2019s Mythos AI model with safeguards that prevent it from answering questions about cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry. Prior to the public release, which Anthropic said it had conducted in collaboration with the US government, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-mythos-preview-project-glasswing\/\" class=\"text link\">Mythos Preview AI model<\/a> had a limited rollout in April. The goal was to give companies and organizations an opportunity to use its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropics-mythos-will-force-a-cybersecurity-reckoning-just-not-the-one-you-think\/\" class=\"text link\">powerful cybersecurity capabilities to improve their defenses<\/a>, and stem concerns that the technology could be exploited by bad actors to develop powerful hacking tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/fable-mythos-access\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/fable-mythos-access&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/fable-mythos-access\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a> on Friday, Anthropic says it received a letter from the US government at 5:21pm ET. \u201cThe letter did not provide specific details of its national security concern,\u201d Anthropic wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOur understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or \u2018jailbreaking\u2019 Fable 5,\u201d the company added. \u201cWe reviewed a demonstration of this specific technique being used to identify a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities all appear relatively simple, and we have found that other publicly-available models are able to discover them as well without requiring a bypass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the blog post, the company argued that it has implemented strong safeguards to reduce the likelihood of Claude Fable 5\u2019s misuse. Anthropic also claimed that the jailbreak the US government found for Claude Fable 5 was narrow, and would not have made an attacker meaningfully more dangerous than they would have been with another AI model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cTo date, the government has only given us verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak, which essentially consists of asking the model to read a specific codebase and fix any software flaws,\u201d the company said in its blog post. \u201cOur understanding is that one potential jailbreak was shared with the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Spokespeople for the White House and US Commerce Department did not immediately respond to WIRED\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a policy essay earlier this week that he and the company support a fair, structured, and transparent government process that would block the release of unsafe AI models.
