{"id":2119,"date":"2026-06-15T11:44:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T11:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2119"},"modified":"2026-06-15T11:44:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T11:44:05","slug":"the-kratom-civil-war-is-heating-up-and-maha-has-picked-a-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2119","title":{"rendered":"The Kratom Civil War Is Heating Up, and MAHA Has Picked a Side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A decade ago,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/release-the-kratom-inside-drug-culture\/\" class=\"text link\">kratom<\/a> advocates fought a surprisingly successful campaign against a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/press-releases\/2016\/08\/30\/dea-announces-intent-schedule-kratom\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/press-releases\/2016\/08\/30\/dea-announces-intent-schedule-kratom&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/press-releases\/2016\/08\/30\/dea-announces-intent-schedule-kratom\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/09\/dea-wrong-ban-cure-opioid-addiction\/\" class=\"text link\">Drug Enforcement Administration ban<\/a> that claimed the obscure Southeast Asian plant posed \u201can imminent hazard to public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They won bipartisan allies from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\" class=\"text link\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> to Rand Paul, and helped create a billion-dollar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/01\/31\/1198909933\/1a-draft-01-31-2024\" class=\"text link\">industry<\/a> out of kratom, which has pain-relieving effects they said could help fight the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/indiana-reeling-from-opioid-crisis-arms-officials-with-data\/\" class=\"text link\">opioid epidemic<\/a> as a far safer, natural alternative to pills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, many of those same pro-kratom activists are calling for a ban on products containing concentrates of one of kratom\u2019s active components: 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH, an ultra-potent extract with opioid-like effects. And it\u2019s causing major friction amongst consumers, sellers, and advocates of both substances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is a chemically manipulated, full-blown opioid that is now in the marketplace,\u201d claims Mac Haddow, the senior public policy fellow at the American Kratom Association, a kratom industry lobby group. \u201cThey masquerade as kratom products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The proliferation of 7-OH in gummies, capsules, and shots with brand names like Magic 7OH, 7 O\u2019Heaven, and Pure OHMS across thousands of gas stations and corner stores over the past few years has caused increasing consternation. Consumers of 7-OH have spoken of its excruciating withdrawal symptoms, and there have been <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/nation\/california\/2025\/10\/14\/kratom-effects-6-fatal-overdoses-linked-to-7-oh-synthetic-kratom\/86695082007\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/nation\/california\/2025\/10\/14\/kratom-effects-6-fatal-overdoses-linked-to-7-oh-synthetic-kratom\/86695082007\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/nation\/california\/2025\/10\/14\/kratom-effects-6-fatal-overdoses-linked-to-7-oh-synthetic-kratom\/86695082007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> of polydrug overdoses involving 7-OH and other substances. Some are now entering rehab to overcome their dependency, while others are self-detoxing based on advice from Redditors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The kratom community fears that 7-OH\u2019s bad reputation could drag the entire kratom industry into a regulatory quagmire. But the 7-OH industry has organized against the potential prohibition, claiming 7-OH is kratom, despite only appearing in trace amounts within the leaves of the kratom plant, and that its benefits as an analgesic outweigh its potential harms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anti-7-OH directives from the federal government have exacerbated tensions between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Last July, US Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described the 7-OH industry as \u201csinister\u201d at a press conference where FDA commissioner Marty Makary called for the DEA to categorize the drug as Schedule I\u2014the most restrictive class of banned substances. Speaking from the Oval Office on May 11, President Donald Trump <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">publicly endorsed<\/a> \u201cnatural 7-OH,\u201d in confusing remarks which appeared to refer to kratom. On top of all that, it appears that both RFK Jr. and Department of Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin\u2014who is also pushing for a 7-OH crackdown\u2014have strong ties to a kratom lobbyist (and convicted criminal) behind a notorious kratom drinks company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Proponents of 7-OH<\/span> see the substance and the plant it\u2019s derived from as inexorably linked. In April 2025 testimony to Colorado legislators <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/colorado\/news\/kratom-colorado-law-daniel-bregger-act-regulations\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/colorado\/news\/kratom-colorado-law-daniel-bregger-act-regulations\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/colorado\/news\/kratom-colorado-law-daniel-bregger-act-regulations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debating<\/a> how to regulate kratom and 7-OH, Michele Ross, the chief scientific adviser to the 7-OH advocacy group 7-HOPE Alliance, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/summary_attachments\/3654\/download\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/summary_attachments\/3654\/download&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/summary_attachments\/3654\/download\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cTo say 7-OH is not kratom is to say caffeine is not coffee or THC is not cannabis. It simply does not make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But as opposed to coffee, cannabis, and kratom\u2014which have been consumed for centuries if not thousands of years\u20147-OH does not have a long history of human use. It\u2019s only been on the market for a few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Many of the products that are labeled 7-OH contain little-understood compounds with unknown biological effects in animals or humans, says Chris McCurdy, a leading kratom researcher and director of the University of Florida\u2019s translational drug development core. \u201cSo, these products, while represented as \u2018clean\u2019 are anything but.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, a dozen states, from California to Vermont, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/abc6onyourside.com\/news\/local\/growing-crackdown-more-states-ban-synthetic-kratom-or-7-oh-ohio-before-federal-government\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/abc6onyourside.com\/news\/local\/growing-crackdown-more-states-ban-synthetic-kratom-or-7-oh-ohio-before-federal-government&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/abc6onyourside.com\/news\/local\/growing-crackdown-more-states-ban-synthetic-kratom-or-7-oh-ohio-before-federal-government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to reports, have <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2026\/04\/28\/kratom-usage-increasing-statewide-ban-expiring\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2026\/04\/28\/kratom-usage-increasing-statewide-ban-expiring&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2026\/04\/28\/kratom-usage-increasing-statewide-ban-expiring\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already moved<\/a> ahead of federal scheduling with their own 7-OH bans.
