Social media is making our children unhappy and unsafe,\u201d said Starmer, in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/2066421329859936656\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/2066421329859936656&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/2066421329859936656\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an X post<\/a>. \u201cOur children deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Under-16s will lose access to social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube, while the minimum age for chatbots that imitate romantic interactions will be raised to 18. The ban does not apply to messaging services WhatsApp and Signal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Under the new measures, expected to come into force\u00a0in\u202fspring \u202f2027, the UK government will also ban livestreaming features and the ability for strangers to contact children under the age of 16 across all platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In an effort to restrict late-night doomscrolling, it will also consider introducing an overnight social media curfew for under 18s, with details to follow in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The social media ban is characterized by the UK government as an attempt to shield children from extreme and graphic content and other online harms, such as bullying. \u201cThis is a line in the sand,\u201d Starmer <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added<\/a>. \u201cTech giants had their chance and failed, but we\u2019re stepping in to protect children, back parents and set a new normal for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meta, X, and TikTok did not respond immediately to requests for comment. YouTube spokesperson Jay Stoll said: \u201cYouTube is a vital resource for young people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/howyoutubeworks\/youtubes-impact\/\" class=\"text link\">educators and parents<\/a>. Blanket bans push kids out of such curated, supervised, beneficial experiences and towards anonymous, less safe services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cBecause the majority of time spent on Snapchat is in private messaging between friends and family, an outright ban that disconnects teens from those relationships doesn\u2019t make them safer\u2014it may simply push them to less safe platforms,\u201d says Frederika Cook, public policy at Snap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though British politicians have considered restricting teenagers\u2019 use of social media for a number of years, the idea has gained in popularity since the Australian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kids-social-media-australia-ban\/\" class=\"text link\">imposed a similar ban<\/a>\u2014the first of its kind\u2014last November. The issue has become surprisingly prominent in recent elections at all levels, multiple members of Parliament tell WIRED, and opposition parties have come out in support of a ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The UK ban follows a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public consultation<\/a> process that ran from March to May, attracting more than 100,000 submissions from parents, academics, lobbyists, government bodies, and the like. The government announced the new measures before releasing its full findings from the consultation, which it has promised to make public by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A former special advisor to Starmer\u2019s Labour government, who asked to remain anonymous to discuss internal party matters, says they believe that Starmer rushed through the ban in a bid to shore up parliamentary support, anticipating a challenge to his leadership. \u201cThe issue is a significant one for voters, and high-pressure by-elections [the equivalent of a special election in the US] and threats of a leadership challenge have forced Downing Street to move,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A preliminary <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-10468\/CBP-10468.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-10468\/CBP-10468.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-10468\/CBP-10468.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research briefing<\/a> published by the government suggests that the consultation respondents were broadly divided into three camps: those who supported total ban on social media for under 16s; those who supported a ban on particular features; and those who objected to any form of restriction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">More than 90 percent of parents that responded to the consultation <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16\/parental-support-for-a-social-media-minimum-age-of-16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support an outright ban<\/a>.
