It was mid-pandemic levels of tricky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI flew to Oklahoma to shoot with Wayne Coyne,\u201d Mackta says. \u201cHe shows up wearing one of those helmets, with the ventilation system to protect you, a metallic puffer jacket and big silver moon boots.\u201d They couldn\u2019t hear a word Coyne said in the helmet, so the frontman went home and shot the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NLmD_k7y25o&amp;t=64s\" class=\"text link\">promo video<\/a> himself: \u201cHow to pronounce this weird word \u2018ko-buzz.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-is-hi-fi-audio\/\" class=\"text link\">Qobuz questions<\/a> after \u201cHow do you say it?\u201d are likely \u201cCan I transfer my music library across?\u201d and \u201cDoes it have everything?\u201d The answers: yes and <em>almost<\/em>. Case in point: I recently switched to Qobuz, after nearly 20 years with Spotify. (Emotional.) I used <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/soundiiz.com\/partner\/qobuz\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/soundiiz.com\/partner\/qobuz&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/soundiiz.com\/partner\/qobuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a third-party service called Soundizz to transfer my songs<\/a>; it took half an afternoon to port, with a more than 90 percent hit rate for my playlists.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">One Million Club<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I&#8217;m not alone, according to Mackta, who landed at Qobuz after years at major and indie record labels\u20142025 was a banner year for the 19-year-old company. Twelve months ago, Qobuz had around 500,000 subscribers. The French streamer had grown steadily since 2007, targeting \u201cpeople who already knew what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-is-hi-fi-audio\/\" class=\"text link\">hi-res music<\/a> was\u201d with its 100 million\u2013plus catalog of lossless CD-quality and 24-bit music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The first winds of change arrived with Liz Pelly\u2019s January 2025 book <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Mood-Machine\/Liz-Pelly\/9781668083512\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Mood-Machine\/Liz-Pelly\/9781668083512&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Mood-Machine\/Liz-Pelly\/9781668083512\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mood Machine<\/em><\/a>, which criticized Spotify\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2025\/mar\/05\/mood-machine-by-liz-pelly-review-a-savage-indictment-of-spotify\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2025\/mar\/05\/mood-machine-by-liz-pelly-review-a-savage-indictment-of-spotify&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2025\/mar\/05\/mood-machine-by-liz-pelly-review-a-savage-indictment-of-spotify\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">business practices<\/a>, featuring interviews with former employees and artists calling for fairer industry economics. As Mackta puts it, \u201cThis is not a music company; music was just a means to an end.\u201d It renewed the scuttlebutt amongst artists about low payouts, and Qobuz\u2019s daily US trial numbers started to pick up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In mid-October, free-tier users started posting the ICE recruitment ads they saw on Spotify, which went viral on TikTok and Instagram Reels. \u201cThe day that story broke was our biggest day ever in the US,\u201d Mackta says. Qobuz saw another spike in numbers, plateauing until Spotify\u2019s own marketing convinced more people to switch in early December. \u201cThe second best day was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-make-your-spotify-wrapped-better-this-year\/\" class=\"text link\">Spotify Wrapped<\/a>,\u201d he says. Around a third of its revenue now comes from the US, its biggest market. Those are still teeny numbers next to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/spotify-q1-2026-earnings-revenue-total-premium-subscribers-1236731842\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/spotify-q1-2026-earnings-revenue-total-premium-subscribers-1236731842\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/spotify-q1-2026-earnings-revenue-total-premium-subscribers-1236731842\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify<\/a> (293 million paid subscribers) and Apple Music (more than 100 million). \u201cFor us to say we&#8217;re gonna compete with Apple or Amazon,\u201d Mackta says, \u201cwe might as well say we&#8217;re trying to launch a rocket.\u201d Qobuz\u2019s goal is to reach 1 percent of the paid streaming market; under its French CEO Denis Th\u00e9baud, it expects to reach profitability by March 2027.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Higher Payouts<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For years, Qobuz had popped up in posts by artists bemoaning being paid \u201ca quarter of a cent per stream\u201d on big platforms versus \u201ca much higher number\u201d on Qobuz. Wading into digital payment structures to labels and rights holders can get murky, with low transparency, vague payout ranges and, same as it ever was, conflicts between labels and artists. But in March 2025, the company released that all-important number, verified by an independent auditor: Qobuz pays an average of $0.01873 per stream, or $18.73 per 1,000 streams. \u201cWe knew we had the best number so we thought we\u2019ll just lay it down,\u201d Mackta says. \u201cAnyone else want to tell us what theirs is?
