{"id":2259,"date":"2026-06-17T10:58:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2259"},"modified":"2026-06-17T10:58:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:58:59","slug":"west-antarctica-is-missing-way-too-much-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=2259","title":{"rendered":"West Antarctica Is Missing Way Too Much Ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Antarctica\u2019s west coast<\/span> is missing an area of winter sea ice the size of France, sparking concerns for threatened penguins other marine life and global sea levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One expert said the loss of ice in the Bellingshausen Sea was \u201cdepressing\u201d and the failure of ice to form could have intensified <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/jun\/10\/record-winter-temperatures-in-antarctic-raise-fears-over-speed-of-climate-breakdown\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/jun\/10\/record-winter-temperatures-in-antarctic-raise-fears-over-speed-of-climate-breakdown&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/jun\/10\/record-winter-temperatures-in-antarctic-raise-fears-over-speed-of-climate-breakdown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a heatwave over the continent\u2019s peninsular last week<\/a> that saw daytime temperatures peak at 15.4 degrees Celsius which is more than 20 degrees Celsius above average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s winter in Antarctica, when sea ice expands rapidly around the continent peaking in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But satellite observations showed the Bellingshausen Sea\u2014on the west side of the Antarctic peninsular and which by June would usually be covered by ice\u2014was almost completely ice free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Scientists said the region was missing about 650,000 square kilometers (250,000 square miles) of sea ice, compared with the average between 1991 and 2020. That is an area about the size of France and almost tenfold the size of Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI\u2019m concerned. It\u2019s depressing,\u201d said Dr Will Hobbs, an Antarctic sea ice expert at the University of Tasmania with the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt is remarkable that we are in June, and there is no sea ice there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He said this was the third time in four years that sea ice had been very low in the region. \u201cI don\u2019t think we will see sea ice there any more. It\u2019s done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He said the loss of sea ice was likely linked to changes in the ocean and scientists were trying to understand if global heating was a factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He said the region was important for krill\u2014a critical part of the food web for species in the region. Krill would usually be hiding from predators under the ice in winter, where they graze on algae.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On June 10 there was about 11.4 m square kilometers of sea ice around the entire continent compared to a long-term average for that date of 12.6 m square km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Dr. Phil Reid, who monitors Antarctic conditions at Australia\u2019s Bureau of Meteorology, said the Bellingshausen Sea had seen \u201cincredible coastal exposure\u201d in winter and summer in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He said just to the area\u2019s west were the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers\u2014the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/tc.copernicus.org\/articles\/18\/2583\/2024\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/tc.copernicus.org\/articles\/18\/2583\/2024\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/tc.copernicus.org\/articles\/18\/2583\/2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continent\u2019s major contributors to ice loss and sea level rise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Floating ice shelves in front of the glaciers could break up faster if protective sea ice is absent for longer periods, he said, and this could then speed up the loss of ice from the glaciers, pushing up global sea levels in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Bellingshausen Sea\u2019s coastline was the site of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/25\/emperor-penguins-thousands-of-chicks-in-antarctica-likely-died-due-to-record-low-sea-ice-levels\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/25\/emperor-penguins-thousands-of-chicks-in-antarctica-likely-died-due-to-record-low-sea-ice-levels&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/25\/emperor-penguins-thousands-of-chicks-in-antarctica-likely-died-due-to-record-low-sea-ice-levels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tragedy in late 2022 when thousands of emperor penguin chicks<\/a> died during a \u201ccatastrophic breeding failure\u201d in four colonies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That event contributed to UN advisers <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/apr\/09\/mass-drowning-of-chicks-puts-emperor-penguins-at-risk-of-extinction\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/apr\/09\/mass-drowning-of-chicks-puts-emperor-penguins-at-risk-of-extinction&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/apr\/09\/mass-drowning-of-chicks-puts-emperor-penguins-at-risk-of-extinction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushing the species up two categories<\/a> to \u201cendangered\u201d on its international threatened species list earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Dr. Peter Fretwell, a scientist at the British Antarctic Survey who has been documenting the penguin\u2019s decline, said the current loss of sea ice in the region was \u201ca serious problem for penguins, especially emperors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cSea ice is forming too late and breaking up too early. It leads to reduced breeding success and longer trips to molting grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Adelie penguin numbers were also falling and crabeater seals were being forced to migrate in summer to find stable ice, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This month the Antarctic peninsular witnessed an extreme temperature spike over several days. Hobbs said while \u201cnobody has done the numbers\u201d it was reasonable to suggest the heat wave was \u201cmade worse by the lack of sea ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sea ice would usually help to cool any warmer airflow entering the region from the north, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Officials at Argentina\u2019s national weather service, Servicio Meteorol\u00f3gico Nacional, said the country\u2019s Esperanza base at the peninsular\u2019s northeastern tip had experienced an \u201cextreme temperature event\u201d that peaked on June 5 and 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Maximum temperatures of 15.4 degrees Celsius and 13.4 degrees Celsius, respectively, were recorded at a period when average daily maximums were minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.
