Since then, the Home Office has delayed the rollout of the systems until 2027, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/cutting-edge-ai-tech-curb-fake-under-18-claims-boost-removals-yhzxe\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/cutting-edge-ai-tech-curb-fake-under-18-claims-boost-removals-yhzxe\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/cutting-edge-ai-tech-curb-fake-under-18-claims-boost-removals-yhzxe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a> it will use the \u201ccutting-edge AI tech\u201d to \u201ccrack down on fake claims\u201d with the aim of stopping \u201cadults attempting to game the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the past five years, AI face scans have emerged as a key component of controversial online age verification programs, as lawmakers have mandated social media platforms, porn websites, and some retailers check their users\u2019 ages. It has also been <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/age-verification-technology-in-alcohol-sales-regulatory-sandbox\/details-of-the-trials\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/age-verification-technology-in-alcohol-sales-regulatory-sandbox\/details-of-the-trials&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/age-verification-technology-in-alcohol-sales-regulatory-sandbox\/details-of-the-trials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trialled<\/a> at some bars and shops in the UK. Face age estimation works by analyzing the features of someone\u2019s face\u2014with the underlying systems trained on millions of age-labeled faces\u2014to produce an estimated age. In controlled laboratory tests, the best algorithms <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/pages.nist.gov\/frvt\/html\/frvt_age_estimation.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/pages.nist.gov\/frvt\/html\/frvt_age_estimation.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/pages.nist.gov\/frvt\/html\/frvt_age_estimation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can predict<\/a> a person\u2019s age to within around 2.5 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">However, the results can vary wildly depending on the algorithm, a person\u2019s gender, demographic details, and other factors. Poor-quality images, such as those with bad lighting, can drastically reduce the performance of the systems. (A case in point: People have tricked some systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/age-verification-is-sweeping-gaming-is-it-ready-for-the-age-of-ai-fakes\/\" class=\"text link\">using images of characters from video games<\/a>.) The Home Office appears to have been aware of potential problems with the technology and still pushed ahead with its program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The leaked Home Office report produced in April 2025, which was completed before the government purchased face-scanning technology, details the testing of seven FAE algorithms against more than 2.5 million images. However, the internal report says that the unnamed \u201cbest performing algorithm\u201d had \u201csubstantial deviations\u201d when tested on images of Sub-Saharan Africans. On average, that system also tended to predict that a 17-year-old would be over 18, and it performed worse on females.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Tens of thousands of people make asylum claims in the UK each year, with many arriving in the country after <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/people-crossing-the-english-channel-in-small-boats\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/people-crossing-the-english-channel-in-small-boats\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/people-crossing-the-english-channel-in-small-boats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous<\/a>, physically demanding journeys in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gy8zrwykno\" class=\"text link\">small boats<\/a> crossing the English Channel. Currently, border staff who doubt the age of someone claiming to be under 18 can assess their physical appearance, answers to interview questions, and general demeanor, to make an initial decision about their age.
