It arrived in your inbox with a QR code, professional branding, and a confirmation email that looked like the real thing. Unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For years, spotting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/scams\/\" class=\"text link\">scam<\/a> was relatively simple. A suspicious email address, broken English, or an obvious typo were often enough to raise suspicion. But at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/world-cup-2026\/\" class=\"text link\">2026 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, those old warning signs are disappearing. AI-generated websites, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/grok-is-still-hosting-sexualized-deepfakes-of-famous-women\/\" class=\"text link\">deepfake videos<\/a>, fabricated audio, and convincing phishing campaigns are making it easier than ever for criminals to impersonate legitimate organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">With the United States, Canada, and Mexico cohosting 104 matches across 16 cities, the largest World Cup in history has created an unprecedented opportunity for cybercriminals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">More than 13,000 FIFA-themed domains were registered between January and May 2026. By early May, roughly one in 41 had already been identified as suspicious or malicious\u2014before a single match had been played, according to Tarek Jammoul, regional managing director at cybersecurity firm TrendAI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">FIFA estimates that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/soccer\/world-cup-last-minute-ticket-sales-phase-re-opens-50-days-kick-off-2026-04-22\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" class=\"text link\">6 million fans<\/a> will fill stadiums to watch the tournament. In fact, more than 150 million tickets were requested within the first 15 days of the sales window alone, making this edition approximately <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/inside.fifa.com\/organisation\/media-releases\/world-cup-2026-ticket-demand-breaks-all-records?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/inside.fifa.com\/organisation\/media-releases\/world-cup-2026-ticket-demand-breaks-all-records?utm_source=chatgpt.com&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/inside.fifa.com\/organisation\/media-releases\/world-cup-2026-ticket-demand-breaks-all-records?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30 times oversubscribed<\/a> compared to previous tournaments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe World Cup is the perfect opportunity for scammers\u2014you couldn\u2019t create a better one,\u201d says David Holtzman, chief strategy officer at Naoris Protocol, a cybersecurity and blockchain company. \u201cThis is soccer. It feels fun and harmless, which lowers people\u2019s defenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For more than a decade, phishing has emerged as the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/aag-it.com\/the-latest-phishing-statistics\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/aag-it.com\/the-latest-phishing-statistics\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/aag-it.com\/the-latest-phishing-statistics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most prevalent type<\/a> of online scams. Spear phishing\u2014a more targeted form of phishing in which attackers use information gathered from search engines, social media, and other online sources to create more convincing messages\u2014presents an even bigger threat for World Cup fans this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The scale of the operation is enormous. Research led by cybersecurity firm Group-IB identified <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.group-ib.com\/blog\/ghost-stadium-football-fraud\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.group-ib.com\/blog\/ghost-stadium-football-fraud\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.group-ib.com\/blog\/ghost-stadium-football-fraud\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 4,300<\/a> fraudulent domains impersonating FIFA\u2019s official web presence, alongside six parallel fraud schemes and four independent threat actors operating ahead of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Common scams include fake ticket sales, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.me\/story\/locked-out-of-the-world-cup-a-year-marked-by-barriers-borders-and-broken-access\" class=\"text link\">fraudulent immigration<\/a> or visa-related services, and misleading accommodation offers. Fans are also warned to look out for counterfeit merchandise and websites impersonating official tournament branding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhen we supported the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery &amp; Legacy (SCDL2022) [at the 2022 FIFA World Cup], the threats we helped identify were serious but still relatively recognizable\u2014fake ticketing pages, survey scams offering free mobile data, and a malicious Android app promising live broadcasts, among others,\u201d says TrendAI&#8217;s Jammoul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The scams themselves have not changed dramatically. The difference is the technology behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAt <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/24\/a\/trend-micro-defends-fifa-world-cup-from-cyber-threats.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/24\/a\/trend-micro-defends-fifa-world-cup-from-cyber-threats.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/24\/a\/trend-micro-defends-fifa-world-cup-from-cyber-threats.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qatar 2022<\/a>, we saw fake streaming domains, data-bait survey scams, and crypto schemes using footballers\u2019 likenesses. Those same categories are staging again now, only larger and more AI-polished,\u201d Jammoul says.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\"><strong>The Scammers Are Using AI Too<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThere\u2019s been an astronomical increase in scams over the past two years, and AI is a big reason why,\u201d says Holtzman, of Naoris Protocol. According to experts, AI isn\u2019t inventing entirely new attack methods\u2014it\u2019s making attackers far more efficient than they were before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">By generating highly personalized, professional-looking emails at massive scale and helping attackers create convincing fake websites, AI is dramatically expanding the threat landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At the same time, AI is also becoming one of the cybersecurity industry\u2019s most powerful defensive tools. By analyzing vast amounts of data and detecting unusual patterns, it can help identify suspicious domains and anticipate emerging threats. But technology alone may not be enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Companies are increasingly relying on collaboration between platforms, cybersecurity firms, and law enforcement to track potential threats.
