The username launch will be rolling out gradually over the coming months, and users will be notified when the feature is available in their country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWith over three billion people on WhatsApp a lot of names overlap, which is why we\u2019re opening reservations early so everyone has the opportunity to select the username that matters to them,\u201d WhatsApp said in its announcement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">You can reserve your username by heading to Settings &gt; Account &gt; Username in the latest version of <a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/2535820043482794\/?cms_platform=android&amp;helpref=platform_switcher\">WhatsApp on Android<\/a>, or by tapping You, selecting your profile, and tapping on Create Username <a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/2535820043482794\/?cms_platform=iphone\">for iOS users<\/a>. Individuals and organizations will have the option to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook handles, as long as it hasn\u2019t been taken by another user. WhatsApp product head Alice Newton-Rex told <em>The Verge<\/em> that usernames for famous figures like celebrities and politicians have already been reserved to prevent them from being claimed \u2014 so if you share a name with a recognized public figure, you\u2019ll have to create an alternative handle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">You can\u2019t browse for people using their usernames, so you\u2019ll need to know the <em>exact<\/em> username of a new contact before you can reach out to them.
