The other day, one of my boys was heading out on a date (new parenting frontier!), and he asked me what he should do if there were an awkward silence<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s okay to be quiet sometimes,\u201d I reassured him. \u201cBut you can always have some back-up questions ready, if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

I remembered a funny This American Life episode<\/a>, where people shared loaded questions they ask on first dates. Editor Emanuele Berry asks potential partners what they think of Beyonc\u00e9, since \u201cit\u2019s a question that tells you how they feel about a powerful Black woman.\u201d Another woman challenges her dinner dates to name their favorite Tom Hanks movies; she says the question serves as a low-stakes personality test.<\/p>\n

On a goofier note, this McSweeney\u2019s middle-of-the-date questionnaire<\/a> made me laugh out loud. (#3. When the bartender came over, did you put on a little voice, or do you just talk like that?<\/em>) (#37. Did I take too long in the bathroom, or was it weirdly quick?<\/em>)<\/p>\n

And when we watched Love on the Spectrum<\/a>, Tanner<\/a>, a 20-something in South Carolina, asked his date rapid-fire questions about animals: \u201cDo you like lizards?\u201d \u201cDo you like snakes?\u201d \u201cDo you like tortoises?\u201d \u201cDo you like frogs?\u201d \u201cDo you like toads?\u201d \u201cDo you like sharks?\u201d \u201cDo you like jellyfish?\u201d \u201cDo you like octopi?\u201d \u201cDo you like squid?\u201d \u201cDo you like whales?\u201d The sweetest.<\/p>\n

Of course, I ended up telling my son my own go-tos \u2014 on first dates, I\u2019ve liked asking about favorite movies<\/a>, sibling birth order<\/a>, and irrational fears<\/a>, since those topics often lead to funny stories. He took it all into consideration \u2014 and later that night returned home with the news that everything had gone very well. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
