It\u2019s the end of an era for the PlayStation store on PS3 and PS Vita, with Sony now planning to shut down its digital distribution service<\/a> on both consoles. The PlayStation store on PS3 will close in select markets later this year, including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting in August, with \u201cadditional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries\u201d to follow in late 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The shutdown across both PS3 and PS Vita \u201cin all other countries\u201d will take effect in July 2027. After this date, Sony says that console owners will be unable to purchase new content, but can continue downloading games they\u2019ve previously purchased \u201cfor the foreseeable future\u201d after the deadline passes. That means if you haven\u2019t already purchased specific titles for the aging consoles \u2014 the PS3 and PS Vita turning 20 years old and 15 years old respectively this year \u2014 you still have some time to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,\u201d Sony said in its announcement. \u201cAs we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This announcement comes as Sony is also gearing up to cease all production of physical PlayStation discs<\/a> for games released after January 2028 \u2014 which begs the question of how releases will be preserved in future given the finite lifespan of digital stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
