Especially the companies that make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/electric-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">electric cars<\/a>, which cost <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/ev-market-monitor-may-2026\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/ev-market-monitor-may-2026\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/ev-market-monitor-may-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an average of $55,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That makes America\u2019s newest and cheapest electric truck a welcome addition to the market\u2014and an odd duck. Officially unveiled last week, the small, modular offering from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/slate-ev-truck-price-specs-release-date\/\" class=\"text link\">Michigan-based automaking upstart Slate<\/a> costs just below $25,000 for its base model, and the base model doesn\u2019t get you much. You\u2019ll have to pay more for everything, from powered windows to speakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But beyond being bare bones, there\u2019s another hidden quirk that allows Slate to reach a rock-bottom price: a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. It\u2019s a technology invented in the US but perfected in China. They\u2019re cheaper than traditional nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a quest to make lower-cost EVs, a handful of US-based manufacturers are on Slate\u2019s path, leaning into the less popular chemistry. And in a weird way, the US boomlet in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-us-inches-toward-building-ev-batteries-at-home\/\" class=\"text link\">this particular battery chemistry<\/a> has China to thank\u2014and also President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Changing Lanes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Slate wasn\u2019t initially focused on LFP batteries, the website <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/799667\/slate-truck-lfp-battery-range\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/799667\/slate-truck-lfp-battery-range\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/799667\/slate-truck-lfp-battery-range\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">InsideEVs noted last week<\/a>. The reason was simple: In 2022, Congress passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-secret-weapon-of-the-new-climate-bill-tax-credits\/\" class=\"text link\">sweeping climate law<\/a> that created a tax credit of up to $7,500 for buyers of new EVs. To qualify for the full credit, manufacturers had to use batteries assembled in the US, and, eventually, made using materials from the US and its allies. Critically, the new rules discouraged the inclusion of materials from Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China, all dubbed \u201cforeign entities of concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Manufacturers focused on affordability planned to build vehicles with those restrictions in mind, including Slate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Those rules made it problematic to use LFP batteries. US scientists discovered the materials\u2019 battery applications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-us-inches-toward-building-ev-batteries-at-home\/\" class=\"text link\">back in the 1960s<\/a>. But more than a decade ago, Western and Asian battery-makers shifted their focus to other, more energy-dense chemistries. Chinese manufacturers, though, decided they were willing to exchange LFP chemistry\u2019s range issues for its promise to lower costs and improve stability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Since then, Chinese EV giants including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/byd\/\" class=\"text link\">BYD<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/catl-china-battery-production-evs\/\" class=\"text link\">CATL<\/a> have built up a robust supply chain around the chemistry, producing not only LFP cathodes, but also the capacity to mine, process, and manufacture everything else that goes into the batteries. Today, 97.8 percent of LFP cathode production takes place in China, according to figures from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, a London research firm. (Nearly 85 percent of <em>all<\/em> cathode production happens in China, too.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">US automakers began to show interest in the technology even after the tax credit was first announced. Ford, for example, said it would <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/13\/ford-ev-battery-plant-china-catl.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/13\/ford-ev-battery-plant-china-catl.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/13\/ford-ev-battery-plant-china-catl.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partner with CATL<\/a> to manufacture LFP batteries in the US, but the American automaker still had to weigh the cost and performance of the batteries with their tax-credit eligibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Then the rules changed, and automakers\u2019 calculus got less complicated. Last summer, the GOP-led Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/5-big-ev-takeaways-one-big-beautiful-bill\/\" class=\"text link\">fulfilled a long-standing Trump campaign promise<\/a> to \u201cend the electric vehicle mandate\u201d by killing the tax credit. The move set EVs back in the US. Research firm BloombergNEF predicted earlier this month that US sales will fall by 19 percent this year because of the policy change, and the decisions automakers afterwards made to reduce their EV output.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now automakers have to deal with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/one-solution-to-the-gas-price-spike-used-evs\/\" class=\"text link\">confusing<\/a> and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/now-available-cox-automotive-2026-mid-year-review\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/now-available-cox-automotive-2026-mid-year-review\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/now-available-cox-automotive-2026-mid-year-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sluggish<\/a> EV market. But they no longer have to worry about the foreign content of their EV batteries for fear of losing the tax credit.
