{"id":3152,"date":"2026-07-02T17:30:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3152"},"modified":"2026-07-02T17:30:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:30:42","slug":"the-dea-plans-to-ban-kratom-compound-7-oh-sold-as-a-gas-station-opioid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3152","title":{"rendered":"The DEA Plans to Ban Opioid-Like Kratom Compound 7-OH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The Drug Enforcement<\/span> Administration plans to temporarily ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-kratom-civil-war-is-heating-up-and-maha-has-picked-a-side\/\" class=\"text link\">7-OH<\/a>, a component of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/release-the-kratom-inside-drug-culture\/\" class=\"text link\">kratom<\/a> that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/opioid-drug-addiction-algorithm-chronic-pain\/\" class=\"text link\">opioid<\/a>-like effects and is sold in gas stations and smoke shops around the country in the form of gummies, drinks, and capsules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2026-13580\/schedules-of-controlled-substances-temporary-placement-of-7-hydroxymitragynine-above-a-specified\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2026-13580\/schedules-of-controlled-substances-temporary-placement-of-7-hydroxymitragynine-above-a-specified&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2026-13580\/schedules-of-controlled-substances-temporary-placement-of-7-hydroxymitragynine-above-a-specified\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">draft notice of intent<\/a> in the Federal Register, scheduled to be published Monday, the federal agency says it will temporarily make 7-OH a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act, the same category as heroin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The ban would apply to products that go over a specific threshold of 7-OH and would be applicable for two years, with the potential to extend it for a third. The DEA claims 7-OH \u201cpresents severe risks to public health, including tolerance, dependence and addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The move is a major win for the mainstream kratom industry, which has been fighting 7-OH with the backing of government officials, including President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Kratom is a Southeast Asian plant that has <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8369573\/\" class=\"text link\">analgesic and antidepressant properties<\/a> when taken in low doses. Natural kratom contains <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12671409\/\" class=\"text link\">trace amounts<\/a> of 7-OH. But in the last few years, there has been an explosion in the production and sales of unregulated 7-OH products, which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12671409\/\" class=\"text link\">much more potent<\/a> than natural kratom products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In May, Trump <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CASE_forAmerica\/status\/2054047295847444989?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> \u201cnatural 7-OH,\u201d meaning kratom, saying the administration was looking at \u201cgetting that approved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As WIRED <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-kratom-civil-war-is-heating-up-and-maha-has-picked-a-side\/\" class=\"text link\">previously reported<\/a>, both Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Department of Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin have strong ties to the kratom industry. As a senator, Markwayne Mullin fought alongside Secretary Kennedy to regulate 7-OH, which is a synthetic drug marketed to kids at convenience stores via deceptive packaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">7-OH has been <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.issup.net\/node\/33941\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.issup.net\/node\/33941&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.issup.net\/node\/33941\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dubbed<\/a> \u201cgas station heroin\u201d by some because it activates mu-opioid receptors in the brain and therefore has potentially addictive qualities. But even kratom products that aren\u2019t marketed as 7-OH can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/prescription-drug-abuse\/in-depth\/kratom\/art-20402171\" class=\"text link\">cause similar issues<\/a> when taken <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11493341\/\" class=\"text link\">at higher doses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Kratom lobbyists are celebrating the proposed ban on 7-OH.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis DEA action should end the debate,\u201d said Mac Haddow, senior fellow on public policy for the American Kratom Association, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.americankratom.org\/news\/dea-confirms-chemically-manipulated-7-oh\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.americankratom.org\/news\/dea-confirms-chemically-manipulated-7-oh&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americankratom.org\/news\/dea-confirms-chemically-manipulated-7-oh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a press release<\/a>. \u201cChemically manipulated 7-OH opioids are not kratom.
