{"id":3188,"date":"2026-07-03T10:04:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T10:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3188"},"modified":"2026-07-03T10:04:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T10:04:57","slug":"when-the-law-kills-your-polestar-electric-car-dealership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3188","title":{"rendered":"When the Law Kills Your Electric Car Dealership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Owning a US<\/span> electric vehicle dealership has been a wild ride in the 2020s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Since Polestar Short Hills opened in northern New Jersey in 2021, it went through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/evs-and-hybrids\/\" class=\"text link\">Covid-era<\/a> demand spike and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-cobalt-crisis-could-put-the-brakes-on-electric-car-sales\/\" class=\"text link\">EV shortage<\/a> that left some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/secondhand-new-evs-price-rise\/\" class=\"text link\">used electrics with higher valuations<\/a> than new ones; a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/want-tax-credit-buying-electric-vehicle-move-fast\/\" class=\"text link\">federal tax credit of up to $7,500<\/a> that brought a new wave of drivers in the door; lower sales volumes after the rollback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/5-big-ev-takeaways-one-big-beautiful-bill\/\" class=\"text link\">of that federal tax credit<\/a>, and the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/nj-tax-on-electric-vehicles\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/nj-tax-on-electric-vehicles&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/taxes\/nj-tax-on-electric-vehicles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">snipping of a state one<\/a>; and then another wave of buying when EV-curious drivers began running from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-donald-trump-maga\/\" class=\"text link\">Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla<\/a> because of the CEO\u2019s involvement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/doge\/\" class=\"text link\">Trump administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, Matthew Haiken, who owns that Polestar dealership along with three other (non-Polestar) dealerships in the Prestige Collection Auto Group, faces another and more serious challenge. Polestar said in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/media.polestar.com\/releases\/954\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/media.polestar.com\/releases\/954&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/media.polestar.com\/releases\/954\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">late June<\/a> that the US Commerce Department had denied an authorization that would have allowed the brand to continue selling cars in the US despite a federal rule restricting the sale of vehicles with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-is-how-you-get-a-chinese-ev-into-the-united-states\/\" class=\"text link\">Chinese-made connected-vehicle technology<\/a>. The company, which is majority-owned by China&#8217;s Geely Holding and its founder Li Shufu, says it will stop selling Polestar vehicles in the US beginning with the 2027 model year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s so unfortunate,\u201d Haiken says. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for my customers who have been reaching out; it\u2019s hard for my staff.\u201d He says he and the owners of the US\u2019s other 31 Polestar dealerships have invested \u201cmany millions\u201d in selling the cars and called the authorization decision \u201ca shock to me and all the dealers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Volvo, which is also majority-owned by Geely, received authorization from the Commerce Department in March, allowing it to continue selling its vehicles in the US, despite its Chinese connections. Volvo said at the time that it held \u201cconstructive discussions\u201d with the department about the automaker\u2019s \u201cgovernance, technology and data security.\u201d (When asked about the discrepancy, a Polestar spokesperson said that the company \u201ccannot comment on how legislation applies to other manufacturers.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI am very frustrated in Polestar, globally,\u201d Haiken says. \u201cI think they really dropped the ball, and I blame them. I don\u2019t blame the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Commerce Department under the Biden Administration officially approved the connected-vehicle rule in January 2025, after government officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-ban-china-russia-ev-cars-security\/\" class=\"text link\">argued that a ban<\/a> on Chinese- and Russian-made automotive hardware and software was necessary for national security reasons. The federal government said that internet-connected automotive cameras, microphones, and GPS equipment threatened US safety. \u201cIt doesn&#8217;t take much imagination to understand how a foreign adversary with access to this information could pose a serious risk to both our national security and the privacy of US citizens,\u201d Commerce secretary Gina Raimondo said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The US Commerce Department did not respond to WIRED\u2019s questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Polestar said in a statement last week that US dealerships would sell \u201cexisting stock\u201d of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/polestars-plan-to-save-itself-from-ruin\/\" class=\"text link\">Polestar 3<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/review-polestar-4\/\" class=\"text link\">Polestar 4<\/a>, and that a US service network would \u201ccontinue to support customers.\u201d It framed the move as &#8220;increasing its strategic focus on Europe,\u201d and said that 94 percent of Polestar\u2019s first quarter 2026 sales took place outside of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Haiken calls that statistic misleading because the brand\u2019s newest offering, the Polestar 4 coupe, went on sale in Europe in January 2024 but wasn\u2019t available in the US until December 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Some Polestar dealerships handle service issues through Volvo centers, but Haiken said his stand-alone Polestar service center will continue fixing and servicing the EVs. \u201cWe have the volume to justify it,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have to be around to perform that work.\u201d Not all dealerships might make the same decision, he said, though vehicles will likely be sent to the closest service center for tune-ups and fixes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/when-the-law-kills-your-polestar-electric-car-dealership\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Owning a US electric vehicle dealership has been a wild ride in the 2020s.
