In June, Apple announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/buying-a-used-iphone-makes-more-sense-than-ever\/\" class=\"text link\">increased prices<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/which-macbook-should-you-buy\/\" class=\"text link\">MacBooks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/the-best-ipad\/\" class=\"text link\">iPads<\/a>. Xbox consoles are also <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2026\/06\/25\/xbox-console-price-update\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2026\/06\/25\/xbox-console-price-update\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/news.xbox.com\/en-us\/2026\/06\/25\/xbox-console-price-update\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">getting more expensive<\/a> starting in August. This is on the heels of already-raised prices on such products as Sony\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/sony-playstation-5-pro\/\" class=\"text link\">PlayStation 5 Pro<\/a> and, you know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/war-in-iran-sent-oil-prices-up-trump-will-decide-how-high-they-go\/\" class=\"text link\">oil<\/a>, which has raised gas prices and added to the cost of shipping something to you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This fresh bout of price increases\u2014following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tariffs-are-going-to-make-your-electronics-more-expensive\/\" class=\"text link\">last year\u2019s tariffs<\/a>\u2014is driven by many factors, but the chief culprit is the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/solving-the-pc-memory-crisis\/\" class=\"text link\">memory shortage<\/a>, i.e., software component producers making it a priority to manufacture chips for AI data centers over other tech that requires them. If this were a short-term issue, the companies affected would likely have absorbed the costs. But the memory shortage does not seem to be disappearing anytime soon, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-bubble-will-burst\/\" class=\"text link\">AI bubble<\/a> has not exactly popped yet. Too much demand for too little supply usually means the inevitable\u2014companies pass their costs on to consumers via upward-creeping prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIn the past, you maybe could have waited out little blips like this,\u201d says Shawn DuBravac, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chief economist<\/a> at the Global Electronics Association, which <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/emails.ipc.org\/links\/Global-Electronics-Association-state-memory-market-report26.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/emails.ipc.org\/links\/Global-Electronics-Association-state-memory-market-report26.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/emails.ipc.org\/links\/Global-Electronics-Association-state-memory-market-report26.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports on the memory shortage<\/a> and the industries it affects. \u201cI don&#8217;t think that\u2019s the case here. Waiting is not a strategy right now and probably won\u2019t be for the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">DuBravac says the move to avoid price hikes is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-buy-refurbished-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">buy refurbished gear<\/a>, but if you need something new, then keep an eye out for what price increases have already hit. If something hasn\u2019t seen a price hike yet, it may soon. But even if prices have increased, this may be the best base price you\u2019ll see in a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey are very intentional in their pricing, and there\u2019s a lot of coordination that goes along with all of that,\u201d DuBravac says. \u201cIf you&#8217;re looking at products that have already had a price increase, you probably have a little bit of time to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Just buying everything you want right this second is not realistic for people who feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wired-gear-team-tips-on-ways-to-save-money\/\" class=\"text link\">financially strapped<\/a>. People are feeling the pinch as the specter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/back-to-school\/\" class=\"text link\">back-to-school<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/gift-guides\/\" class=\"text link\">holiday product<\/a> cycles looms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cPeople are worried that they&#8217;re going to have to pay a lot of money for the next device or the next purchase,\u201d says Thibaud Hug de Larauze, the CEO of the secondhand marketplace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/back-market-ifixit-partnership-repair\/\" class=\"text link\">Back Market<\/a>. \u201cThe bad thing about that is just pushing people to upgrade more rapidly because they\u2019re scared of inflation, basically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The bright spot on all this mess might be that refurbished and secondhand markets built to support and resell used products are booming. Buying refurbished tends to be more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-buy-ethical-and-eco-friendly-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">ethical and eco-friendly<\/a> than buying something new. And now is a particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/buying-a-used-iphone-makes-more-sense-than-ever\/\" class=\"text link\">good time<\/a> to look into the secondhand market for devices like phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sean Cleland, the vice president of Mobility tech at the recommerce company <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bstock.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bstock.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bstock.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">B-Stock<\/a>, says used smartphones are selling for 10 to 20 percent more than they were in December 2025. In a normal year, those numbers would have likely been flipped, with used phones depreciating. But demand for refurbished products has gone up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe supply chain will correct eventually,\u201d Cleland says. \u201cSecondary market pricing will go back to normal depreciation, but it will continue being a step above what it was in 2025. It just never comes all the way back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A more vibrant resale market means more people are giving refurbished devices a shot. It might be out of necessity, but it\u2019s led to a booming industry that helps secondhand devices find new lives instead of heading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/e-waste-recycling-cant-keep-up-precious-metals\/\" class=\"text link\">the landfill<\/a>. Manufacturers have also leaned into their own resale programs, offering buyback or trade-in programs for phones, computers, tablets, watches, and headphones.
