In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/document\/26109993948\/1\">a letter to the FCC<\/a> on Tuesday, ABC argues that the agency\u2019s actions pose a risk to editorial independence by targeting programs \u201cperceived as unfriendly to the current administration,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/tv\/abc-the-view-review-formal-reply-filing\/\">as reported earlier by <em>The Wrap<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In February, the FCC Chair Brendan Carr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/881174\/brendan-carrs-fcc-is-going-after-the-view-for-its-james-talarico-interview\">confirmed<\/a> that he\u2019s reexamining <em>The View<\/em>\u2019s classification as a \u201cbona fide\u201d news program after the talk show held an interview with Rep. James Talarico (D-TX), who is running for a spot in the Senate. <em>The View<\/em>\u2019s classification exempts it from <a href=\"https:\/\/firstamendment.mtsu.edu\/article\/equal-time-rule\/\">the \u201cequal time rule<\/a>,\u201d which requires broadcasters to give candidates running for the same office equal air time on the network.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThe First Amendment does not permit the government to sit in an editor\u2019s chair,\u201d ABC writes in response to the February investigation. \u201cYet that is the seat the Commission now proposes to take \u2014 deciding which broadcast programs qualify as legitimate news and, for those it finds wanting, compelling them to surrender their airtime to guests they never chose to feature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The FCC initially determined that <em>The View<\/em> is a bona fide news program in 2002. ABC argues that while <em>The View<\/em> hasn\u2019t changed since then, the \u201cpolitical climate around it\u201d has. \u201cThe Commission has trained its attention on daytime and late-night television,\u201d ABC says. Former <em>Late Show<\/em> host Stephen Colbert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/880009\/stephen-colbert-cbs-fcc-brendan-carr-talarico-interview\">says CBS blocked him<\/a> from airing an interview with Rep. Talarico in February due to concerns surrounding the FCC\u2019s changing policies. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/05\/2026\/the-view-throttles-back-political-candidate-bookings-following-fcc-inquiry\"><em>Semafor<\/em> reports that <em>The View<\/em><\/a> has avoided hosting political candidates since the FCC\u2019s inquiry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cAn exemption that protects editorial independence only when the speaker\u2019s politics please those in power protects nothing at all; the shelter it gives one program today it will deny another tomorrow, when the gavel changes hands \u2014 as it inevitably will,\u201d ABC says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/919739\/fcc-disney-abc-broadcast-licenses-threat\">FCC ordered ABC stations<\/a> owned by Disney to file for an early license renewal in April as part of an investigation into the company\u2019s diversity, equity, and inclusivity policies, raising concerns about the agency\u2019s interference with the content aired by broadcasters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/962342\/abc-fcc-the-view-free-speech\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABC is firing back at the Federal Communications Commission after the agency opened an investigation into The View\u2019s airtime of political candidates.
