The corrections were duly noted, and yet the clip kept traveling anyway. By the fourth week of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/world-cup-2026\/\" class=\"text link\">2026 World Cup<\/a>, the internet had already decided who Erling Haaland is. AI or not, in the video, Haaland was in character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If the old model of stardom was a white-knuckle grip on your own image, the new one, as evidenced in Haaland\u2019s recent internet fame, is being a character so vivid, so relentlessly meme-able, that AI can do the hype thing for you. The celebrity, therefore, becomes something like an open-source character, only loosely tethered to the human who has the face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">And the Haaland fake didn\u2019t spawn from nowhere. It came out of China, where the striker has already become somewhat of a meme sensation. He has spent the past few months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/Z4GBdBkiLXk\" class=\"text link\">fronting a commercial<\/a> for a Chinese herbal drink, gamely attempting Mandarin, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7150243845349838088\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7150243845349838088&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7150243845349838088\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">being turned into song<\/a> and being rechristened <em>Habao<\/em> (roughly, \u201cHa Baby\u201d) by fans who delight in the gap between the on-pitch destroyer and the off-pitch golden retriever. As his popularity in China exploded, Haaland launched official <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7647942099643452724\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7647942099643452724&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.douyin.com\/video\/7647942099643452724\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Douyin<\/a> and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/football\/article\/3356245\/manchester-city-striker-erling-haaland-delights-chinese-football-fans-new-weibo-account\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/football\/article\/3356245\/manchester-city-striker-erling-haaland-delights-chinese-football-fans-new-weibo-account&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/football\/article\/3356245\/manchester-city-striker-erling-haaland-delights-chinese-football-fans-new-weibo-account\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weibo<\/a> accounts, and quickly amassed millions of followers. The reflection clip was one artefact in an entire cottage industry of AI Haaland memes and edits, all riffing on the same joke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">What, then, actually happens when deepfake becomes fan art?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This is increasingly how sports fandom works online. Athletes are no longer consumed solely through highlights or post-match interviews but as evolving characters with recognizable quirks and storylines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They\u2019re also now getting the full fandom treatment previously reserved for fictional characters, in lore, canon, character arcs, edits. A <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/wsc-sports.com\/blog\/industry-insights\/the-2025-2026-generational-fan-study\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/wsc-sports.com\/blog\/industry-insights\/the-2025-2026-generational-fan-study\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/wsc-sports.com\/blog\/industry-insights\/the-2025-2026-generational-fan-study\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent report<\/a> from AI sports content firm WSC Sports found that Gen Z in particular feels more connected to individual athletes than they do teams, and a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/our-expertise\/insights\/2023\/oct\/gen-z-reshaping-professional-sports-economics.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/our-expertise\/insights\/2023\/oct\/gen-z-reshaping-professional-sports-economics.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/our-expertise\/insights\/2023\/oct\/gen-z-reshaping-professional-sports-economics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> by the consulting firm Oliver Wyman found that social media content from athletes is the single largest driver of Gen Z sports engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So once a footballer becomes a character, the fans stop being mere spectators and can instead have a say in content. The \u201cfanon,\u201d which refers to the material the audience invents to fill the gaps the canon leaves, is now highly susceptible to AI. You no longer need the athlete to generate the lore; the audience can synthesize it on demand, and the character absorbs it seamlessly. It isn\u2019t surprising, then, that Haaland\u2019s deepfake was so readily embraced online. The content doesn\u2019t have to be real, it just needs to fit the character fans have created.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yet, perhaps what the Haaland-ification of it all suggests is a strange shift away from a mere deepfake panic. Though <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@clairebellrose\/video\/7657121662751591710?_r=1&amp;_t=ZN-97ihRkoRmR4\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@clairebellrose\/video\/7657121662751591710?_r=1&amp;_t=ZN-97ihRkoRmR4&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@clairebellrose\/video\/7657121662751591710?_r=1&amp;_t=ZN-97ihRkoRmR4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">much of the public<\/a> was, in fact, fooled by the AI video, a meaningful share of the audience is actively opting in and sharing nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">And fans have been doing this sort of thing for years. When the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@deeptomcruise?lang=en\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@deeptomcruise?lang=en&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@deeptomcruise?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@deeptomcruise<\/a> account started posting eerily perfect Tom Cruise deepfakes on TikTok in 2021, the response was delight in the millions. Similarly, an <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/today\/ai-created-a-song-mimicking-the-work-of-drake-and-the-weeknd-what-does-that-mean-for-copyright-law\/\" class=\"text link\">AI-generated track mimicking Drake and The Weeknd that appeared in 2023<\/a> created its own fan hype, getting streamed enthusiastically before the labels could get it pulled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That same year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/pope-coat-artificial-intelligence-internet-trust\/\" class=\"text link\">Balenciaga Pope<\/a> fooled half the internet for an afternoon, which actually resulted in more praise for the Balenciaga coat than it did concern over AI.
