As part of Microsoft\u2019s big Xbox \u201creset,\u201d which includes layoffs affecting 3,200 staffers, jettisoning studios, and shifting investments to focus on \u201chigher priority projects,\u201d Obsidian Entertainment is changing its plans. The studio, behind games like Grounded<\/em> and The Outer Worlds<\/em>, is starting work on a new Fallout<\/em> title and has canceled \u201cmultiple projects,\u201d including a sequel to last year\u2019s Avowed<\/em>, according to Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite the success of the Fallout<\/em> TV show<\/a>, which is getting a third season<\/a>, Xbox hasn\u2019t released a new game in the series since 2018\u2019s Fallout 76<\/em><\/a>. Josh Sawyer, Obsidian\u2019s studio design director, will head up the new Fallout<\/em> game. Sawyer, who has also served as director on 2022\u2019s Pentiment<\/em><\/a> and on Fallout: New Vegas<\/em>, had apparently been directing an RPG that was \u201csimilar structurally and thematically to Fallout<\/em> but was not part of the franchise,\u201d Bloomberg<\/em> says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As for the Avowed<\/em><\/a> sequel, Bloomberg<\/em> reports that development was \u201cgoing well\u201d and would have been announced within the next year. Obsidian still plans to work on the early access game Grounded 2<\/em><\/a> and on DLC for The Outer Worlds 2<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Xbox spokesperson Delaney Simmons declined to comment. The company laid off about 25 percent of Obsidian\u2019s staff this week, according to Kotaku<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
