{"id":3431,"date":"2026-07-08T20:36:33","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3431"},"modified":"2026-07-08T20:36:33","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:36:33","slug":"the-ftc-settlement-with-john-deere-is-a-huge-win-for-the-right-to-repair-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3431","title":{"rendered":"The FTC Settlement With John Deere Is a Huge Win for the Right-to-Repair Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">On Wednesday, the<\/span> US Federal Trade Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2026\/07\/ftc-states-secure-settlement-deere-company-advancing-farmers-right-repair\" class=\"text link\">announced a settlement<\/a> with tractor manufacturer John Deere over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ftc-sues-john-deere-over-repairability\/\" class=\"text link\">2025 lawsuit<\/a> that accused the company of behavior that \u201cunlawfully acquired and maintained monopoly power in markets for repair services for Deere farm equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/Deere-JointMotion-StipOrd.pdf\" class=\"text link\">full statement<\/a> lays out obligations for John Deere\u2019s repair services, requiring the company to give farmers and third-party repair shops access to the same equipment and repair resources it provides to official John Deere dealers. This includes software capabilities, such as reading and resetting codes and pairing with other software, which customers have long had limited access to, creating delays when diagnosing equipment problems. Delayed fixes can mean delayed harvests, which many farmers saw as a fundamental threat to their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Under the agreement, John Deere will be required to provide this level of access, equipment, and services for the next 10 years, monitored by the FTC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAfter years of fighting for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/right-to-repair\/\" class=\"text link\">right to repair<\/a>, this order gives farmers real hope,\u201d Willie Cade, a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.repair.org\/our-board-and-board-advisors\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.repair.org\/our-board-and-board-advisors&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.repair.org\/our-board-and-board-advisors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">board member<\/a> of the repair advocacy organization <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.repair.org\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.repair.org\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.repair.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Repair.org<\/a>, wrote in an email to WIRED. \u201cBut promises on paper must become tools in farmers\u2019 hands, and we will be watching implementation every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Farmers have been fighting against John Deere\u2019s repair practices for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/04\/dmca-ownership-john-deere\/\" class=\"text link\">more than a decade<\/a>, but the FTC began its fight in 2021, led by then-chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ftc-votes-to-enforce-right-to-repair\/\" class=\"text link\">Lina Khan under the Biden administration<\/a>. In April, John Deere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/john-deere-is-paying-farmers-99-million-for-allegedly-monopolizing-repair\/\" class=\"text link\">agreed to pay out $99 million<\/a> in a separate class action lawsuit brought against the company in 2022. Repair and consumer advocates say this FTC settlement does far more to help farmers than a payout did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">John Deere has maintained that it already has robust <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.deere.com\/en-us\/our-company\/service-repair-resources\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.deere.com\/en-us\/our-company\/service-repair-resources&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deere.com\/en-us\/our-company\/service-repair-resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repair resources<\/a> for its customers, including service manuals and diagnostic equipment. In John Deere\u2019s press release, the company says the settlement is in line with what it has been doing all along, saying that \u201cthe agreement reinforces Deere\u2019s continued innovation toward more flexible repair options, emphasizing increased access and transparency for customers.
