Feds Aren\u2019t Happy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The head of<\/span> the top US road safety agency cautioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/autonomous-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">autonomous vehicle<\/a> developers in a letter Wednesday about what he called an \u201cunacceptable\u201d pattern of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">driverless cars<\/a> interfering with the work of law enforcement and other first responders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cTo state it bluntly: An AV that cannot safely interact with first responders is a danger to the general public,\u201d Jonathan Morrison, the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/sites\/nhtsa.gov\/files\/2026-07\/ADS-developers-letter-july-2026.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/sites\/nhtsa.gov\/files\/2026-07\/ADS-developers-letter-july-2026.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/sites\/nhtsa.gov\/files\/2026-07\/ADS-developers-letter-july-2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> in a letter that he described as a \u201ccall to action\u201d for technology developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Morrison wrote that NHTSA has documented a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/emergency-first-responders-say-waymos-are-getting-worse\/\" class=\"text link\">clear pattern\u201d of interference<\/a> over the last few months, including incidents in which the vehicles drove into active emergency scenes, blocked ambulances and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cruise-fire-truck-block-san-francisco-autonomous-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">firefighters<\/a>, and didn\u2019t respond in situations involving flashing lights, fire, and traffic cones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He directed developers to &#8220;immediately focus their resources on fixing this issue,\u201d and said that the NHTSA would schedule meetings with each company by the end of July to hear about solutions. Neither Waymo nor Zoox responded to WIRED\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Officials with several city law enforcement and emergency departments told NHTSA representatives in a closed-door meeting earlier this year that Waymo robotaxis were impeding some emergency responses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/emergency-first-responders-say-waymos-are-getting-worse\/\" class=\"text link\">WIRED reported in April<\/a>. One fire chief called the vehicles\u2019 behavior in those situations a \u201csafety issue for our crews as well as the victims.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A San Francisco official told the agency that the company\u2019s tech was \u201cbacksliding,\u201d and the city\u2019s fire chief said, \u201cWaymo is frequently now blocking our fire stations from access.\u201d A representative from Austin\u2019s police department also said that Waymos tend to freeze in difficult situations, and the vehicles often fail to respond to officers\u2019 hand signals in emergencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI believe the technology was deployed too quickly in too vast amounts, with hundreds of vehicles, when it wasn\u2019t really ready,\u201d the Austin police official said, according to audio of the meeting obtained by WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Austin first responders appeared in a separate City Council meeting this spring to discuss how a Waymo robotaxi blocked an ambulance for two minutes as it tried to respond to a downtown mass shooting that killed three people and injured at least 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In this week\u2019s letter, Morrison said his agency would \u201ccontinue to exercise our enforcement authority for developers that do not address significant safety concerns.\u201d NHTSA has issued several recalls related to autonomous vehicle technology in the last several years, including two related to Waymo\u2019s behavior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/waymo-takes-its-self-driving-cars-to-virginia\/\" class=\"text link\">on flooded roads<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/waymo-recalls-robotaxis-over-risk-theyll-drive-at-speed-into-freeway-construction-zones\/\" class=\"text link\">near construction zones<\/a>, and another related to Zoox robotaxis stopping in front of oncoming traffic. (The companies reported that both issues were solved through software updates.) A school district in Austin also worked with Waymo to train its vehicles to stop for school buses, though the fix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-school-district-tried-to-help-train-waymos-to-stop-for-school-buses-it-didnt-work\/\" class=\"text link\">didn\u2019t immediately work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/av-developers-automated-vehicle-that-cannot-safely-interact-first-responders-danger\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/av-developers-automated-vehicle-that-cannot-safely-interact-first-responders-danger&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/av-developers-automated-vehicle-that-cannot-safely-interact-first-responders-danger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> Wednesday, the NHTSA also touted the Trump administration&#8217;s work to ease regulations preventing more autonomous vehicles from operating on public roads.
