As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/microsofts-carbon-emissions-climb-25-as-tech-giants-grapple-with-ais-energy-toll\/\"><em>GeekWire<\/em><\/a>, the report states that Microsoft\u2019s carbon emissions increased 25 percent in 2025, totalling 34 million metric tons \u201cwithout select interventions.\u201d Microsoft says this was \u201cdriven primarily by the expansion of our datacenter infrastructure,\u201d as well as the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2025\/02\/13\/progress-on-the-road-to-2030\/\">decision last February<\/a> to stop purchasing \u201cnon-additional, unbundled renewable energy certificates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Several years ago, Microsoft set itself a goal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/16\/21068799\/microsoft-carbon-capture-climate-change\">be carbon negative by 2030<\/a>, meaning it will need to remove more carbon emissions than it produces. This isn\u2019t the first time Microsoft has faced setbacks toward accomplishing that goal, as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/15\/24157496\/microsoft-ai-carbon-footprint-greenhouse-gas-emissions-grow-climate-pledge\">2024 sustainability report<\/a> showed a similar rise in climate pollution.
