Together, they show a troubling trend of rising tech company emissions, driven by the global race to build out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/data-centers-taking-over-texas-pollution-could-be-catastrophic\/\" class=\"text link\">power-hungry data centers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/07\/09\/responsibly-building-the-ai-future\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/07\/09\/responsibly-building-the-ai-future\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/07\/09\/responsibly-building-the-ai-future\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a> announcing the report, Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith and chief sustainability officer Melanie Nakagawa say that the emissions increase is driven \u201cprimarily by the expansion of our datacenter infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A significant portion of that increase, they write, was tied to emissions from energy the company purchased or acquired to run its operations. Known as Scope 2 emissions, that greenhouse gas pollution accounted for 13 percent of Microsoft\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Data centers, which use large amounts of energy running artificial intelligence chips, have pushed many large tech companies\u2019 net-zero goals increasingly out of reach over the past few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Amazon disclosed a 16 percent increase in its CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in its recent sustainability report. Google <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/sustainability.google\/reports\/google-2026-environmental-report\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/sustainability.google\/reports\/google-2026-environmental-report\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.google\/reports\/google-2026-environmental-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in its new sustainability report that annual greenhouse gas emissions rose 18 percent last year compared to 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/30\/google-ai-boom-emissions-power-use\" class=\"text link\">biggest single-year increase<\/a> it\u2019s recorded. The company has aggressively invested in renewable energy, but it\u2019s also begun adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-new-google-funded-data-center-will-be-powered-by-a-massive-gas-plant\/\" class=\"text link\">fossil fuel power<\/a> for some of its data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Microsoft highlighted in its sustainability report that it had matched 100 percent of its electricity consumption with carbon-free sources. But the data center build-out is set to accelerate\u2014and some of Microsoft\u2019s recent investments could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-gas-powered-data-centers-could-emit-more-greenhouse-gases-than-entire-nations\/\" class=\"text link\">drive its emissions higher<\/a>. Notably, the new report covers the 2025 fiscal year, which ended last June, and has made a number of deals since then involving gas-powered data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Last month, the company officially announced a partnership with Chevron, which is building a power plant to supply a future data center for the company in West Texas. Permits show that that power plant could emit more than 11.5 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent annually, an amount greater than the entire state of Rhode Island. The company has also leased buildings on the Stargate campus in Abilene, Texas, which will be powered by an onsite power plant that could emit more than 7.8 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent each year. Microsoft has also signed a nonbinding letter of intent for compute at a West Virginia data center, which would be powered by off-grid gas that could <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/oilandgaswatch.org\/facility\/cdf08f90-5579-4a86-97ae-0204faa2976f\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/oilandgaswatch.org\/facility\/cdf08f90-5579-4a86-97ae-0204faa2976f&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/oilandgaswatch.org\/facility\/cdf08f90-5579-4a86-97ae-0204faa2976f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emit more than 11 million tons of greenhouse gases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMicrosoft\u2019s strategy includes exploring a variety of options for mitigating the emissions from its electricity consumption, consistent with our sustainability ambitions,\u201d Nakagawa says in a statement to WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Microsoft\u2019s approach to offsetting some of its emissions via credits and other investments is also changing. The company says it stopped purchasing unbundled renewable energy certificates, a move that contributed in part to the rise in Scope 2 emissions. Using these types of certificates have been <a href=\"https:\/\/kleinmanenergy.upenn.edu\/commentary\/blog\/renewable-energy-credits-decarbonizing-the-grid-or-just-a-corporate-messaging-tool\/\" class=\"text link\">criticized in recent years<\/a> as greenwashing because they don\u2019t necessarily add more clean power to the grid. Unbundled RECs are essentially a \u201cpaper transaction that is physically disconnected from real-world consequences,\u201d says Danny Cullenward, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. (Cullenward is also a visiting faculty member at Google but notes he was not speaking on behalf of the company.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s highly commendable that [Microsoft] is moving away from unbundled RECs and prioritizing investments in new clean electricity, where power purchase agreements and other long-term offtake agreements can and do cause new clean electricity to come online,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Despite the rise in emissions and its continued investments in AI, Microsoft still says that it plans to become \u201ccarbon negative\u201d by 2030.
