{"id":3602,"date":"2026-07-11T14:53:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T14:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3602"},"modified":"2026-07-11T14:53:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T14:53:46","slug":"chinas-tianwen-2-space-probe-earth-quasi-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=3602","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Tianwen-2 Space Probe Has Rendezvoused With Earth\u2019s Quasi-Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The China National<\/span> Space Administration\u2019s asteroid probe Tianwen-2 successfully reached the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chinese-spacecraft-earths-quasi-moons-china-tianwen-2\/\" class=\"text link\">asteroid Kamo\u2019oalewa<\/a>, which orbits the Sun in a path nearly identical to Earth\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">After undergoing multiple orbital adjustments in deep space, it first detected Kamo\u2019oalewa on June 6, 2026. On July 2, it successfully captured the first-ever images of Kamo\u2019oalewa from a distance of about 20 kilometers.  This achievement comes at the end of a 400 day journey covering a distance of roughly 1 billion kilometers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Kamo\u2019oalewa is the most stable of Earth\u2019s known quasi-satellites, and because it orbits the Sun in near-synchronous motion with Earth, it is considered a relatively accessible celestial body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But landing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/asteroids\/\" class=\"text link\">asteroid<\/a>\u2014let alone gathering samples\u2014will be a challenge. Kamo\u2019oalewa has an average diameter of only about 41 meters and rotates at high speed. This means the spacecraft must achieve stable contact and collect samples within a limited timeframe. If it manages to gather samples, it will then release them in a capsule during an Earth flyby in November 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Tianwen-2 is equipped with multiple cameras with different focal lengths. In addition to switching between a narrow-field-of-view camera and a wide-field-of-view camera depending on the situation, it also features a detachable camera that will be used during sample collection. Since the probe\u2019s orientation must be finely adjusted when capturing images, seizing these limited windows of opportunity is an extremely difficult task. Tianwen-2 plans to conduct more detailed scientific observations of Kamo\u2019oalewa\u2019s shape, material composition, and internal structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If this mission is successful, it will mark another achievement in asteroid sample return, following Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2009\/12\/all-about-hayabusa-the-spacecraft-not-the-halo-armor\/\" class=\"text link\">Hayabusa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/for-the-second-time-ever-an-asteroid-sample-returns-to-earth\/\" class=\"text link\">Hayabusa2<\/a> missions\u2014the first to return asteroid samples to Earth\u2014and NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-first-peek-inside-nasas-osiris-rex-capsule-is-a-glimpse-back-in-time\/\" class=\"text link\">OSIRIS-REx<\/a> mission. Material from small celestial bodies orbiting near Earth could provide one of the few clues to understanding the formation of the solar system, including Kamo\u2019oalewa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt is highly likely to contain primordial information from the early days of the solar system\u2019s formation, and it holds great scientific value for studying early material composition, formation processes, and evolutionary history,\u201d explains Han Siyuan, deputy director of the Lunar and Space Exploration Engineering Center and spokesperson for the Tianwen-2 mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Researchers have previously theorized that Kamo\u2019oalewa <a href=\"https:\/\/wired.jp\/article\/moon-asteroid-origins\/\" class=\"text link\">is a fragment of the Moon blown away<\/a> by an asteroid impact millions of years ago has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/for-the-second-time-ever-an-asteroid-sample-returns-to-earth\/\" class=\"text link\">widely accepted<\/a> until recently. This is because the spectrum of reflected light closely resembles that of silicate minerals found on the Moon\u2019s surface. Simulations also backed the theory up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In May, though, an international research team\u2014including the Chinese Academy of Sciences\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-73284-w\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">published<\/a> a paper that casts doubt on this leading hypothesis. A reanalysis of available data found that the central wavelength of the absorption band\u2014the point where light weakens at a specific wavelength\u2014matched the characteristics of LL chondrites (a type of meteorite with low iron and metal content).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The research team conducted an experiment in which they irradiated LL chondrite meteorite powder with a laser to simulate space weathering caused by solar wind and micrometeorites. The results closely matched observational data of Kamo\u2019oalewa. The researchers posit that Kamo\u2019oalewa likely migrated to the Earth\u2019s vicinity from the Flora family\u2014a group of celestial bodies in the asteroid belt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If Tianwen-2 successfully completes its mission to take samples and return to Earth, it will likely help answer questions about Kamo\u2019oalewa&#8217;s origins.
