Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield had been seeking documents from Paramount related to its takeover<\/a> of Warner Bros. Discovery. Rayfield also asked a state circuit court judge to delay the closing of the deal by 60 days so that his office could review the documents. But according to Deadline<\/em> and Variety<\/em><\/a>, he\u2019s now dropped his civil investigative demand for the records.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Obviously, Paramount is pleased with Rayfield\u2019s decision to withdraw his request, but the AG\u2019s office isn\u2019t exactly satisfied with the outcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Jenny Hansson, communications director for Rayfield, told Deadline<\/em><\/a> that, \u201cParamount made it clear that they weren\u2019t going to comply with the investigative demand, and that they think they\u2019re above the law. We\u2019re not going to let them waste Oregonians\u2019 resources on these games. We\u2019ve withdrawn the motion to consider our next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rayfield specifically was interested in documents relating to Paramount\u2019s lobbying efforts, which were codenamed \u201cProject Warrior.\u201d Paramount is run by David and Larry Ellison<\/a>, major supporters of Donald Trump who enjoy a cozy relationship with the White House. The President went out of his way during the <\/a>proceeding to say that Netflix, Paramount\u2019s primary rival<\/a> for Warner Bros. Discovery, would \u201cpay the consequences<\/a>\u201d if it didn\u2019t remove Trump critic Susan Rice from its board.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

While Oregon\u2019s efforts to stop the merger have stalled, others, including California<\/a>, New York, and even the UK<\/a>, are considering moves to block the deal on antitrust grounds. Hollywood has also <\/a>spoken out in opposition to the merger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
