Do you ever pack a pretty dress for a trip? Sometimes I\u2019ll just throw a bunch of everyday clothes into a suitcase. But when Alison<\/a> returned from a family trip and showed me this photo, I remembered the joy of a Vacation Dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cI packed this dress<\/a> and reached for it all week,\u201d Alison told me. \u201cThe breathable linen was comfortable for everything from long sightseeing walks to dinners in the town square. The fabric didn\u2019t wrinkle in my suitcase, and the brown shade hid the inevitable kid stains.\u201d (Here are similar red shoes<\/a>, too.) <\/p>\n

Inspired, I scouted a few more, perfect for restaurant dinners or just swanning around\u2026<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

1. Elegant brown.<\/strong> Fun fact: Did you know Magnetic Fields singer Stephin Merritt wears only brown? I once interviewed him for a New York Magazine story<\/a>, and he said the same thing about stains: \u201cBrown shows absolutely nothing. You\u2019d have to spill some fuchsia paint.\u201d I love Alison\u2019s linen dress<\/a> and this polka-dot midi<\/a> \u2014 both are on sale.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

2. Crisp white.<\/strong> This dress<\/a> is a splurge, but how beautiful is the eyelet hem? Honestly, it would work well for a casual wedding. Two less spendy options: linen<\/a> and lace-trimmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

3. Burst of red.<\/strong> Red looks so striking in the summer, especially against blue water and green trees. This easy silhouette<\/a> feels like something Marianne would wear in Normal People, don\u2019t you think? I\u2019m also into this midi<\/a> and cheesecloth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

4. Chic leopard.<\/strong> My friend Frosso<\/a> reports that everyone is wearing leopard print right now in Paris. Noted! I\u2019d go for this cotton midi<\/a> or cool shirtdress<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

5. Pretty floral.<\/strong> Finally, how sweet is this mini<\/a>? It feels like a wild garden, and I want to wear it with flip flops all summer. Embroidered flowers<\/a> are lovely, too. xoxo<\/p>\n
