DOGE Downsized It Last Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">As cases of<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everyone-thinks-they-have-diarrhea-parasite\/\" class=\"text link\">diarrhea-causing parasite cyclospora<\/a> rise across the US, former employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the country\u2019s response is being severely hampered by personnel cuts at the agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-cdc-has-a-leadership-crisis\/\" class=\"text link\">mass government layoffs<\/a> last year implemented by President Donald Trump and his so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/doge\/\" class=\"text link\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>, the CDC lab that responds to outbreaks of the parasite cyclospora was downsized from 11 people to just three, according to Joel Barratt, a molecular parasitologist and assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine who previously led that team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cBased on simple math, these outbreak responses\u2014which require rapid, timely responses\u2014are going to be greatly diminished,\u201d he tells WIRED. \u201cCyclospora is just one piece. It&#8217;s making the news right now, but there are other, more dangerous pathogens than cyclospora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Barratt says he left the CDC voluntarily in September after working at the agency for eight years because he felt he could no longer \u201cdo right by public health\u201d amid sweeping policy overhauls and staff purges under Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt became a hostile work environment,\u201d he says. \u201cI had to sit down with many people in my office and tell them, \u2018Look, I&#8217;m really sorry we can&#8217;t renew you because of the hiring freezes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cdc-terminations-workforce-shutdown-rifs\/\" class=\"text link\">reported in October<\/a> that the CDC reduced its total workforce by about 3,000 employees\u2014roughly a quarter of the agency\u2014since January 2025. That number includes layoffs, as well those who accepted the Trump administration\u2019s buyout program. The estimate was compiled by the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2883, which represents CDC workers. The size of the cuts at Barratt\u2019s former lab was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-026-02225-w\" class=\"text link\">first reported by Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">An HHS spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Nearly 7,000 people across the country may have been sickened with cyclospora, although experts say that number is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/explosive-diarrhea-outbreak-about-to-get-bigger\/\" class=\"text link\">almost certainly higher<\/a>. As of Thursday, Michigan alone has identified more than 4,300 cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The CDC is also being stretched thin by a wave of public health crises. Amid the staffing reductions, the agency is also responding to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-trumps-aid-cuts-are-fueling-the-ebola-outbreak\/\" class=\"text link\">major Ebola outbreak<\/a> in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as several US outbreaks including measles; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/blueberries-07-26\/index.html\" class=\"text link\"><em>E. Coli<\/em><\/a> linked to frozen blueberries; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/botulism\/outbreaks-investigations\/infant-formula-june-2026\/index.html\" class=\"text link\">infant botulism<\/a> found in certain powdered infant formula; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/outbreaks\/index.html\" class=\"text link\"><em>salmonella<\/em><\/a> from several sources. Symptoms can take a week or two to appear, and people who get sick may not seek medical care for several days after that, if at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Once a stool sample tests positive for cyclospora, it\u2019s sent to that state\u2019s health department for analysis, which then passes it to the CDC for genetic testing. At the same time, epidemiologists at the state health department reach out to the patient for an interview, which is designed to identify what the person ate within the past two weeks. That information is also sent to the CDC, where epidemiologists look for commonalities among reported cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, the CDC\u2019s lab for parasitic diseases performs genetic testing on the parasites in the stool sample.
