The letters say the Silicon Valley giants should stop \u201caiding and abetting\u201d the sale of explicit deepfake images and \u201csever\u201d business relationships with the app developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cGenerating non-consensual intimate images is illegal, harmful, and completely unacceptable,\u201d Chiu tells WIRED. The city attorney, whose office previously took legal action against 16 popular deepfake websites, says Apple and Google have likely \u201cmade millions of dollars in fees\u201d from apps that offer nudification, and they should improve their moderation processes to stop them appearing in their stores in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThese companies have responsibility to ensure that apps on their platforms do not facilitate sexual abuse,\u201d Chiu says. The city\u2019s legal letters say California\u2019s laws prohibit <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/california\/code-civ\/division-3\/part-3\/section-1708-86\/\" class=\"text link\">supporting services<\/a> that create deepfake pornography. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-remove-nudes-take-it-down-act\/\" class=\"text link\">new laws<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cq8dp2y0z7wo\" class=\"text link\">bans<\/a> aim to tackle the scourge of explicit deepfakes online, technology and social media companies consistently direct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/youtube-and-x-have-become-gateways-to-nudify-apps\/\" class=\"text link\">millions of people toward<\/a> the harmful tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Both <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/guidelines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> have developer policies that prohibit pornography, abuse, and harassment on their platforms. They have previously removed dozens of nudify and deepfake apps, after reports by researchers and journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Google spokesperson Dan Jackson tells WIRED that the company has deleted \u201chundreds\u201d of apps with nudifying features for policy violations, including the five Android apps flagged by Chiu\u2019s office, among other steps to restrict access to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;Google Play does not allow apps that contain sexual content, and we continually take proactive steps to detect and remove apps with harmful content,\u201d Jackson says in a statement. \u201cWhen violations are reported to us, we investigate and take swift action, which in the case of these apps has included suspending hundreds of violating apps and restricting related search terms like &#8216;nudify&#8217; on our store.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Apple did not provide comment ahead of publication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the last five years, a highly lucrative slurry of deepfake \u201cnudification\u201d tech has emerged online\u2014most transparently with xAI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/grok-is-pushing-ai-undressing-mainstream\/\" class=\"text link\">Grok being used to create millions<\/a> of sexualized images in January. A host of apps, websites, and bots allow people (mostly men) to upload pictures of people (overwhelmingly women and girls) and digitally \u201cremove\u201d clothing or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/deepfake-nudify-technology-is-getting-darker-and-more-dangerous\/\" class=\"text link\">place them into graphic sexual scenarios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Often all it takes to create sexual deepfakes is a reference photo and a couple of clicks, with some results available in seconds. Images and videos have become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/deepfake-nudify-technology-is-getting-darker-and-more-dangerous\/\" class=\"text link\">more realistic<\/a> as the underlying generative AI technology has improved, with services providing some results for free or charging small fees to create the harmful content.
