Oops!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bill Radjewski, who runs CollegeFootballData.com, was one of the affected customers. This morning, he woke up to a jarring <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CFB_Data\/status\/2078117398893252983\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/CFB_Data\/status\/2078117398893252983&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CFB_Data\/status\/2078117398893252983\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">email<\/a> alert from AWS: He had racked up more than $1.5 billion in usage fees, and his August 1 bill was on track to be upwards of $3 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI&#8217;ve had this account for 6+ years and in that time my monthly spend has never exceeded $0.02,\u201d Radjewski tells WIRED in an email. He shared screenshots of his three most recent monthly AWS invoices. They each came out to $0.01.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Based on replies to the AWS Support account on X, Radjewski is not alone. While it\u2019s not clear exactly how many customers have been affected, the dashboard characterized the issue as \u201cglobal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The dashboard also said that the billing console \u201cbegan displaying incorrect estimated billing data\u201d on Thursday, July 16, at 10:38 pm EDT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company began investigating the issue about six hours later, per the dashboard, and concluded that the \u201croot cause\u201d of the error was \u201can issue with unit pricing within the estimated billing computation subsystem.\u201d It did not specify what the issue was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In subsequent updates, AWS said it\u2019s \u201crolling back a recent change to the billing computation subsystem\u201d and that it was attempting to revert to its \u201clast known good estimated bill computation.\u201d It also said it had \u201cpaused estimated billing computations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The issue should be resolved by this weekend, and \u201cthere are no customer actions required at this time,\u201d the company wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Ultimately, some customers have decided to post through it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One Reddit user posted a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aws\/comments\/1uyuj4n\/i_owe_7_trillion_what_now\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aws\/comments\/1uyuj4n\/i_owe_7_trillion_what_now\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aws\/comments\/1uyuj4n\/i_owe_7_trillion_what_now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">screenshot<\/a> of their current &#8220;cost and usage overview&#8221; to the AWS subreddit, which showed that they had incurred $7.1 trillion in service fees since July 1\u2014more than twice Amazon\u2019s market cap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/amazon-web-services-glitch-oh-no\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A glitch with Amazon Web Services\u2019 billing operation led some customers to believe they owed the world\u2019s fifth most valuable company billions of dollars.
