{"id":4003,"date":"2026-07-18T00:05:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T00:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4003"},"modified":"2026-07-18T00:05:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T00:05:41","slug":"cyclospora-taylor-farms-taco-bell-iceberg-lettuce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4003","title":{"rendered":"Taylor Farms pulls iceberg lettuce from the US market after cyclosporiasis outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Food producer Taylor Farms released a statement on the Cyclospora outbreak Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfarms.com\/newsroom\/taylor-fresh-foods-statement-regarding-cyclospora-outbreak\/\">confirming<\/a> that it\u2019s \u201cvoluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the US market.\u201d <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/wendys-chipotle-say-they-are-not-affected-by-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-2026-07-17\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/em> reports that, according to a source, Taylor Farms told customers like Yum Brands owner Taco Bell and the food distributor Sysco on Thursday to pull shredded lettuce that had been produced initially as 5-pound bags at a facility in Guanajuato, Mexico, from distribution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Taco Bell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tacobell.com\/newsroom\/taco-bell-statement\">said on Thursday<\/a> that \u201cThe affected ingredient from our supplier is being indefinitely removed from our supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in select states.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/foodborne-pathogens\/cyclospora\">Cyclospora<\/a> parasite infects humans\u2019 small intestine, can take up to one to two weeks to incubate, and causes symptoms including \u201cwatery diarrhea, with frequent bowel movements\u2026 vomiting, body aches, headache, low-grade fever, and other flu-like symptoms,\u201d that may seem to go away and then come back more than once.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/966111\/cyclospora-explosive-diarrhea-parasite-fda-cdc-taco-bell\"><em>The Verge <\/em>reported this week<\/a>, not all of the reported cases have been linked to Taco Bell, and Taylor Farms is a giant, which has said it sells more than $7 billion in produce every year and makes two out of every five of the salad kits sold in grocery stores. However, its name doesn\u2019t appear on most of those items, and while the extent of the outbreak is still under investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/outbreaks\/07-26\/index.html\">the CDC has said<\/a> it\u2019s also looking into illnesses and outbreaks in other states that are unrelated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote _1lkuyz80 _19wv7tc9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1lkuyz88 _19wv7tc1\">Based on information provided yesterday by the FDA, Taylor Farms de Mexico is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1lkuyz88 _19wv7tc1\">While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm that represents less than 1% of the U.S.\u2019s iceberg lettuce supply as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">It hasn\u2019t identified other companies or products to avoid yet. <em>ProPublica\u2019s <\/em>Annie Waldman <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/federal-health-worker-cuts-rfk-trump-administration\/\">reports that the tracing effort is working without<\/a> more than 240 consumer safety specialists who left as the Trump administration cut funding to federal health agencies, and the CDC scaled back its Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) that worked with 10 states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2026\/07\/17\/taylor-farms-pulls-all-iceberg-lettuce-sourced-central-mexico-us-market\/\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> also mentions that a few months ago, the FDA pushed back the compliance deadline on implementing its Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma\/fsma-final-rule-requirements-additional-traceability-records-certain-foods\">(Food Traceability Final Rule)<\/a> from January 20th, 2026, until July 20th, 2028. Its requirement for standardized record-keeping about goods and shipments could\u2019ve made finding the \u201cspecific independent farm\u201d tied to the outbreak easier and faster.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">This all follows statements from the CDC and FDA saying the \u201cexplosive diarrhea parasite\u201d outbreak has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/science\/966875\/washington-post-taco-bell-lettuce-supplier-taylor-farms-linked-to-cyclosporiasis-outbreak\">linked to shredded iceberg lettuce<\/a> served at Taco Bell locations across five states: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/keep-mi-healthy\/infectious-diseases\/infectious-disease-outbreaks\">Michigan alone<\/a>, there are over 5,000 reported cases, with 102 reports of hospitalization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">According to the FDA, \u201cFDA and state partners are actively investigating the source and scope of the contamination.
