The recall came after people across at least five states were sickened with cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes explosive diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The next day, the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/investigation-5-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026\" class=\"text link\">said<\/a> that it had detected the parasite in a sample of Taylor Farms lettuce that wasn\u2019t part of the initial recall. The day after <em>that,<\/em> the company and the FDA said that the result was actually a false positive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cToday, the FDA apologized to us,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/YourTaylorFarms\/status\/2079037403973738528\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/YourTaylorFarms\/status\/2079037403973738528&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/YourTaylorFarms\/status\/2079037403973738528\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Farms then posted on its X account on July 19.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The FDA did not quite agree with that interpretation, however. On July 20, an agency official told reporters that it did not offer the company an \u201cofficial apology.\u201d Instead, the official said, &#8220;mostly we were providing factual information&#8221; about how difficult it is to test for and trace the sources of cyclospora outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The agency emphasized that the recall\u2014which spans 27 states, and includes certain lettuce sold to Taco Bell and Walmart\u2014still stands. \u201cTo clarify, this false-positive lab sample DOES NOT change the basis for FDA\u2019s ongoing outbreak investigation or the overwhelming epidemiological data supporting the current voluntary recall by Taylor Farms,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/US_FDA\/status\/2079238466118865220\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/US_FDA\/status\/2079238466118865220&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/US_FDA\/status\/2079238466118865220\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it posted on X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In its July 19 post, Taylor Farms also wrote that the FDA \u201chas not identified a single positive product test result for Cyclospora.\u201d While true, this elides the difficulties involved in accurately testing for the parasite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Many foodborne illness investigators determine the source of outbreaks <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hbottemiller\/status\/2079254019449762020\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/hbottemiller\/status\/2079254019449762020&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hbottemiller\/status\/2079254019449762020\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without ever testing products<\/a>. Instead, investigators use epidemiological evidence, such as interviewing people who have tested positive, to determine commonalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Taylor Farms has reportedly taken issue with how the FDA and CDC has conducted their weeks-long investigation into the source of the outbreak. <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/17\/health\/cyclospora-taylor-farms-mexico-taco-bell-lettuce.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/17\/health\/cyclospora-taylor-farms-mexico-taco-bell-lettuce.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/17\/health\/cyclospora-taylor-farms-mexico-taco-bell-lettuce.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A spokesperson told The New York Times<\/a> that, last week, the company met with White House and FDA officials to discuss what it called \u201cshortfalls\u201d in the government organizations\u2019 response processes. The Times reported that Taylor Farms executives attempted to cast doubt on the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s conclusions in the meeting, which took place on July 16, the day before Taylor Farms issued its recall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Taylor Farms did not respond to WIRED\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Since May, thousands of people have been sickened with cyclosporasis, as health officials have struggled to pinpoint the source of the outbreak.
