{"id":4131,"date":"2026-07-21T00:12:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T00:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4131"},"modified":"2026-07-21T00:12:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T00:12:19","slug":"fcc-dji-drone-camera-ban-skyrover-xtra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4131","title":{"rendered":"The FCC is planning to retroactively ban disguised DJI gadgets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Last October, we told you how the FCC had given itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/808104\/fcc-order-retroactive-ban-transmitter-national-security\">the power to <em>retroactively<\/em> ban gadgets<\/a> that have already received its approval to be imported and sold in the United States. Now, the FCC\u2019s getting ready to wield that power for the first time, by cracking down on the \u201cDJI front companies\u201d suspected of sneaking the Chinese company\u2019s tech past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/849460\/fcc-foreign-drone-ban-dji-congress-deadline\">its foreign drone ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">For example, we highlighted a deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/gadgets\/961612\/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-ipad-air-magic-mouse-deal-sale\">on Xtra\u2019s version of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3<\/a> just two weeks ago, a product that already got FCC approval before the drone ban ever came down, and a proudct which Amazon offers with next-day shipping. If the FCC\u2019s retroactive ban goes into effect, that product should disappear from all major online retailers and Xtra\u2019s own website, and the company may even need to write off however many cameras are still sitting in US warehouses like Amazon\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The ban <em>wouldn\u2019t <\/em>affect gadgets that have already been purchased, and it wouldn\u2019t happen immediately. The FCC\u2019s currently taking public comments for 30 days first. While the FCC has \u201ctentatively\u201d concluded that these companies are selling equipment that should be banned over national security fears, it claims it\u2019ll listen to \u201cspecific evidence\u201d otherwise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In the meantime, the FCC says it has \u201ctemporarily deferred the grantee codes of these companies,\u201d a phrase that it does not define. (A former FCC official tells <em>The Verge<\/em> he\u2019s never heard that phrase before; we\u2019re asking the FCC if that means these companies can\u2019t get future gadgets authorized for import and sale.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The specific companies that the FCC is targeting include Cogito Tech, Fixaxo Technology, Lyno Dynamics, Skyhigh Tech, Spatial Hover, SZ Knowact and WaveGo Tech (both of whom are behind Skyrover), and Xtra Technology, none of which responded to the FCC\u2019s requests for information. It also includes agricultural drone brand XAG, which did reportedly reply to the FCC once, but not with the information that the FCC asked for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Today, the FCC is also announcing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/oet-institutes-proceeding-withdraw-recognition-sgs-cstc-shenzhen\">it\u2019s parting ways<\/a> with one of the Chinese test labs that helped some of these products make it to market: SGS-CSTC Shenzhen. While SGS-CSTC did reply to the FCC to claim it\u2019s not controlled by the Chinese government, as the China-owned CSTC only has 15 percent ownership of the lab, US law currently considers another entity to have control if it has 10 percent or more or a company \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-47\/chapter-I\/subchapter-A\/part-2\/subpart-J\">at least when it comes to authorizing radios<\/a> for use in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">On July 10th, the FCC said it might take even more actions against the eight \u201cDJI front companies\u201d if they didn\u2019t reply by today, July 20th.
