{"id":4189,"date":"2026-07-22T01:12:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T01:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4189"},"modified":"2026-07-22T01:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T01:12:16","slug":"openai-models-escaped-containment-and-hacked-huggingface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4189","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI Models Escaped Containment and Hacked Hugging Face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">OpenAI disclosed on<\/span> Tuesday that it lost control of two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/in-the-wake-of-anthropics-mythos-openai-has-a-new-cybersecurity-model-and-strategy\/\" class=\"text link\">AI models<\/a> during a security test that ended in a breach of the open AI research platform Hugging Face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Describing the incident as \u201cunprecedented,\u201d OpenAI said its AI models broke out of a sealed testing environment last week and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/security-incident-july-2026\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/security-incident-july-2026&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/security-incident-july-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hacked into Hugging Face\u2019s production system<\/a> to steal the answers to a test they were being graded on. The models\u2014the publicly available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-gpt-56-model-release-trump-admin-approval\/\" class=\"text link\">GPT-5.6 Sol<\/a> and an unreleased, reportedly more capable one\u2014were being evaluated on their offensive hacking skills with the safeguards that normally block high-risk cyber activity switched off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe models identified and chained vulnerabilities across OpenAI\u2019s research environment and Hugging Face\u2019s production infrastructure to obtain test solutions directly from Hugging Face\u2019s production database,\u201d OpenAI and Hugging Face wrote in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a joint blog post<\/a> disclosing the intrusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to OpenAI and Hugging Face, the models escaped through a package registry cache proxy\u2014software that allows developers to install outside code without connecting to the internet. The proxy was the only component in OpenAI\u2019s isolated testing environment permitted to reach the outside world; in normal use that reach extends only to public code repositories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rather than stay contained in the sandbox, the models \u200b\u200b\u201cexploited a zero-day vulnerability\u201d to gain access to the open internet as they \u201chyperfocused\u201d on finding a solution for the AI cybersecurity benchmark known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-models-hacking-inflection-point\/\" class=\"text link\">ExploitGym<\/a>. Such experiments involve prompting that pressures the models to find solutions, essentially egging them on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAfter gaining internet access, the models inferred that Hugging Face potentially hosted models, datasets and solutions for ExploitGym,\u201d OpenAI wrote. \u201cKnowing this, the model searched for and successfully found ways to gain access to secret information that it could use to cheat the evaluation. In one example, the model chained together multiple attack vectors, including using stolen credentials and zero-day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The flaw the models exploited was previously unknown, but flaws in this kind of software are not unusual. Companies have been patching serious vulnerabilities in artifact repositories for a decade. A bug <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.broadcom.com\/support\/security-center\/protection-bulletin\/path-traversal-vulnerability-in-nexus-repository-cve-2024-4956\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.broadcom.com\/support\/security-center\/protection-bulletin\/path-traversal-vulnerability-in-nexus-repository-cve-2024-4956&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadcom.com\/support\/security-center\/protection-bulletin\/path-traversal-vulnerability-in-nexus-repository-cve-2024-4956\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disclosed in 2024<\/a> let anyone who could reach the server ask for a file by URL and get it\u2014configurations files, passwords, access tokens\u2014without logging in. Others have let attackers take control of the server itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Researchers point out that while AI advances have created new and sometimes unexpected challenges, the task of extensively and rigorously isolating infrastructure from the open internet is well explored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is not an AI problem. It\u2019s negligence on a 40-year-old standard\u2014and it\u2019s basically every sci-fi film ever,\u201d says longtime security and compliance consultant Davi Ottenheimer. \u201c\u2018Highly isolated\u2019 and \u2018escaped through the one hole we left open\u2019 cannot both be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In recent months, top AI companies have been raising concerns about the expanding cybersecurity capabilities of upcoming frontier models as the platforms increase in both expertise, creativity, and agentic, autonomous operation.
